Interested to see how you approach weathering the copper on the hull. The light weathering you have done on this so far is wonderful

Should be a lot of progress and multiple updates today. Dreary and 40% chance of rain here so I’m spending my time in the basement on this model. Handiabled ask and you shall receive as that was the first thing I started working on this morning, the hull weathering. I will open a few pictures to show how I did it












I started with the light, teal green, moved to the blue, and then I use that darker green in the area. I thought would be right at or above the waterline. For the darker green, I applied it with the sponge, but then I used a flat wide brush to pull it straight down across the hull

looking good! I also let my Vallejo and AMMO sit for awhile before moving on to sealing.

Well here’s where i finished the day up gang - the hull is done and i did some gold foil, well some old gold on some plastic. Academy’s molds must be soft because you can’t even read the word “SARK” on 1 side.



And finally i managed to glue in the main deck section. I had about 1/8” of gap to close up but the hull is easy to squeeze shut so no worries

Amazing work Chris. The detail on the hull is really an eye catcher. The deck work looks very realistic. And the simulated wood, 🤯I don’t see how you can crank out model so fast with your work schedule. This build brings back a lot of memories from my youth. (Revell USS Constitution).

🤣life as an empty nester with a wife who works swing shift! If no one’s home when i get off work i get to go straight to my model room 🍻

Ooooh, and you brought back another memory…I remember being mad about some punishment i got when i was maybe 10, probably deserved it however, i threw my coat across the room and it ended up catching the Constitution and pulling it off the shelf onto the floor. I fixed it but it was never the same. Wish i’d have kept a bunch of my models from childhood 🙁

Tonight i finished up the deck, now just the railings to go. They will take awhile tho as i have to paint all the rope railing!! Lots of pics here before i drop the masts in and can’t get close without poking myself in the eye 🤣😆 i think the wheelhouse is my favorite part. The brass on the wheel and the cutty sark lettering came out really well, tho i think it does show better in person. Maybe when i get my son to take pics later the dslr he has will bring it alive. Anyhow, i think overall it came out really well. Pretty thrilled for 1st time doing a sailing ship since i was 10 🤯






Hmmm, i liked the worn look of the railing in person but this pic makes me 2nd guess the look. Will have to decide on it before i add the masts as it’s much easier to manipulate just the hull with nothing sticking off of it of coirse 😉

Very good wood effects and detailing Chris!! I remember building the USS Constitution when I was a kid and it was no easy task then. You're putting some good work into this one buddy.

and you know, we weren't so particular about how we built them then, so how come it felt so hard to do lol

glad you like it. being the first time I've done this on a large scale it's good to have more opinions on how it's looking to others!

ok last night and today so far I have been able to finish up all the plastic and painting up to the point where I start the rigging...at least according to the instructions. That was over an hour ago. I've been studying the instructions since then trying to figure out how to rig this thing. I have the Academy guide which is very very vague and I have the Revell guide which is much better but still lacking for a beginner. So I figure I would post up a few pictures and take a break, grab a Rum & Coke on this very dreary rainy holiday afternoon and relax for a bit.












That netting looks wavy in the picture but it's really just the angle the pic is taken at. In real life it has more of a natural droop. I think the others ended up too straight actually but that's mostly due to hem being plastic.

The Head rigging (i believe that is what this is called) is finished up. Took about an hour.



Now to start on the standing rigging, which is what looks like it’s what holds the masts straightfrom port to starboard and bow to stern.

once i ran the lines between the main mast and the front mast I decided to rig the main mast standing rigging. My logic was that I have to tie the main mast in to the front mast first so that when I bring the lines up for the sails on the bow they will pull the masts forward if they all aren't tied in together solidly. Great wisdom from a novice

Last update for the night. All but 2 lines are done on the foremast.







And i learned to tie a bowline knot! Rather than just ca the foremast uses knots in the middle of the mast to hold the line tight. It really does cinch up and stay where you pit it without glue. Once i had the masts straight then i went and put a little ca on them.

AND the rigging is done! My buddy Bradley25mm said it best, “that looks tedious”! Back to aircraft carriers and battleships when this is done me thinks 😆
I’m ecstatic that my masts stayed straight, nothing broke, and none of the yardarms are warped or look like a Sesame Street episode on the letter S 🙈

Here are the first three sails. It took me all day to do all the painting and flory washes and more painting and then a little sanding and multiple clear coats so it was just after lunch when I finally started on sails. Now I just have to keep going. I think it’ll be a lot easier now because I have the patterns down on how to tie the lines for the sails. Boy did that take me a while to figure out from the little 2-D drawings in the instructions












I included my practice piece and the little clamps and some foam that I use to try this out. It was really hard to do on the ship and I ended up spending an hour just practicing in order to be able to work around the rigging and understand how the lines crisscrossed each other.

Looks great with addition of the sails. Looks like it's complicated adding them. Kind of like working around a spider web
