That T34 is definitely an inspiration for me. I have one one the bench and I think it'll be my first attempt at rusting and hairspray. And it is all YOUR fault, Jamie

What a good thread! I think this technique requires some practice, to take the time of drying of the HS and to discover the "right" thickness of the coats applied. If my poor memory doesn't cheat me, I've tried the tech in 3 vehicles, and I'm not very happy with the results, but I will improve it with more models in the future. I like the models of this thread, specially the He 111 ! Let me show my attemps, all 1/35 scale: Beute KV II, Trumpeter finished in 2008 Steyr Artilleriewagen, scrachtbuilt, finished in 2010 StuIG 33B, Dragon, finished in 2011 Cheers Darío

All great looking examples Dario, Thanks for posting them here. Yep it does take lots of practice to get it right. Those that try it for the first time may expect to get it right the first time around, not everyone but I have heard complaints. As with any technique it requires practice and experimenting. Some times a mistake will yield some great results....just a matter of remembering what the heck you did...LOL

WOW!!! There are some fantastic examples here. Good greif, i need to learn how to do that. I got a SU 100 that i want to do but i havent pulled the trigger because ive never tried the technique. I need to get on top of that, and soon! Gary

Yep it does take lots of practice to get it right. Those that try it for the first time may expect to get it right the first time around, not everyone but I have heard complaints. As with any technique it requires practice and experimenting. I agree Rob. I've used the HS technique once (well, at least one model had a "dedicated" HS tech finish - I've used it for bunches of small odds and ends since then). I was really pleased with the result but realized just how tricky the technique can be. I'll post my HS pic later (home with a sick kid - don't have much time to hunt of pics), but I'm wondering. In addition to posting pics of your work, how about talking a little about your technique: what kind of HS do you use and how heavy do you apply it? How long does it dry? What do you paint over the top and how long do you let that sit? What tools do you use to achieve the different effects you get? Etc...

As promised, here is my build using the hairspray tech. I did it about two years ago. It is the Tamiya kit (Pz III L). Oddly enough, I can only find a couple of in progress pics, so these will have to do. I think they at least illustrate the results of the HS tech pretty well, even if the tracks are not done and the half the hatch is missing. ;D I used all Tamiya acrylics for both the base coat and the whitewash. I did the base coat in a Panzer Grey then oversprayed with a fairly heavy dose of hairspray (TresSemme 'Tres Two' Ultra Fine mist). I let that dry, but cannot recall for how long - overnight maybe? Then I went over it with flat white, which sat for 15 - 20 minutes before I went at it with some warm water and soft brushes, as well as a toothpick or two. In general, I was (am) very pleased with the results that I got. I do recall having some trouble getting the 'right' type of wear in all the places I wanted it. There were some spots that I could not seem to get any of the paint to come off, and others where it seemed to come off in big sheets.

Very nice effects fellas. Here are a couple with the AK rust colors and the worn effect. I've done a bit more chipping and will post pics sometime.

Quick question to everyone. How many cots of the HS do you apply with an airbrush?
Im finding it difficult to get the chipping effect.

2 -3 depending on how much chipping you want. also tamiya works best i think for the chipping, if you are using Vallejo then it will be harder to chip

Sorry to necropost (i always seem to be the one that does ), but would anyone be able to give me a tip or two about using HS under multiple coats of paint? I will be doing a hard edged camo scheme with masking on my waffentrager and I don't want to lift the paint etc with the tape. Thanks, Oliver

The brown under the black doesn't pop out, the effect is rather subtle. I had to do more with pigments. I applied hairspray for the blue worn wood. The hood was done with hairspray, the rest of the car with pigments under the final paint color.
