The Kit:
Trumpeter managed to produce a very good line of the T-62 tank. From the basic Model 1961 and 1972, they developed the upgrades of this tank like the IT-1 missile tank, T-62 BDD and T-62MV (the one with ERA).
The kit is molded in grey plastic which exhibits crisp and sharp details. The plastic are not soft but should be handled with care as some parts are delicate and can easily break if not handled well. Kit mating is no problem as the hull parts, turret halves, wheels and tracks went smoothly. Though the main problem still is the Dushka 12.7mm machinegun mount. Based on reference photos, the kit machine gun mount is a bit off scale and has an off-layout. Despite this, I can still get away with it and still build a decent T-62 out of what Trumpeter has provided us. This is a really far step from the older mold of T-62 from the other competitors in the market.
The kit was built with slight modifications as I sawed off the front fenders and mudguards to simulate battlefield maintenance and probably field conditions. Accessories that were used came from assortment of goodies from my spares. Tank antenna was made from guitar strings. The tank crew figures are made by Tank which is a resin figure manufacturer from Russia. The figures are very finely detailed and crafted. They were painted with Vallejo acrylic paints. The tank was finished with Tamiya paints and enamels plus assortment of pigments from Mig and Vallejo to simulatate weathering.
The kit is finished in Russian Army colors and depicts a unit deployed in the Chechnya.
This is my 2nd Trumpeter T-62 and I can say that they did improve their kits already as the overall rating is still good.
A bit of history:
During the Cold War, the Soviets maintained a vast military-industrial complex that churned out many of the weapons of the Cold War. Most of their weapons were used by their allies and satellite countries.
One of these weapon is the T-62 main battle tank. The T-62 was conceived as the successor to the famed T-55 tank.
The T-62 is the brainchild of the designer Leonid Kartsev of the Nizhny Tagil Uralvagonzavod tank factory.
The T-62 was developed with some new improvements from the T-55 such as the upgunned main armament of 115mm Molot gun.
The basic layout is still very similar with the T-55 with the exception of the lenghtened hull. Crewed by 4, T-62 was not yet installed with the autoloader that is to appear on the T-64 tank.
This tank replaced the T-55 on most of the Soviet frontline units but the T-55 was still continued to be manufactured.
The T-62 was not very popular with the Warsaw Pact countries but was very popular in the Arab world as these were used heavily in the conflicts in the Middle East such as the Arab-Israeli wars and the Persian Gulf wars .
Another theater where the T-62s were used is during th Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. T-62 proved to be the tank of choice for the Soviet forces but the Soviet Army operated it like how the US Army operated tanks during the Vietnam War, which is on fire-support role only.
Post-soviet conflicts also showed that the T-62 are still used which are eminent in the Caucasian conflicts specifcally in Chechnya and South Ossetia.
The rest of the photos:
Though Im not sure if this is an M/M1 model so I just enjoyed the build hahaha!
RPGs fire away!
Cheers!
