Hey all this is my first wingy build on the forum so i hope the fellow wingers wont mind me taking up some bench space here I bought this kit last year from a bargain bin i wanted a Tammy P-47 but did not want to ruin a £30 kit for a 1st go so this will be a practice run. This Jug i will be building is a late war variant which saw service Ie Shima, Pacific in May 1945 "Expected Goose" was its original artwork and was part of the 463rd Fighter sq, 507th Fighter group The Kit: So far i have built and painted the cockpit including the pilot i used the chap as the cockpit details were terrible and needed something to hide all this ;D The fueslage was a bit of a stinker too the halves went together ok but 1 side was slighty larger then the other so i had to glue them together then file them flat then Mr Surfacer 500 was used to fill the join this took 2-3 attempts to get it kinda smooth i am happy with how it is to check there was no surface damage i sprayed a coat of Tamiya Yellow Green over the joins as this is what i had in the AB from the cockpit the eagle eyes of Mr CB has had a look and has ticked the quality control box so i can move on to the wings The wings and wheel wells were a lot easier then the fuselage which was a sigh of relief the wheel wells had a splash of Yellow Green before the wing halves were joined together. Then i had a dry fitting session to see how the wings would join to the fuselage i will have more filling and sanding to do as well as making a fillet to decrease the gap on the upper wing joins I was warned by CB that this was a stinker of a kit so im not getting too down beat over this Jugs problems next up will be getting the wings mated to the fuselage and getting the motor built and painted and adding some detail to the under carriage Dan B

Great start to an ordinary kit Dan! As a builder of wingys, do you mind if I offer you some advice? I hope you don't cos I am going to anyway! ;D Try and leave the landing gear and doors off until the very end. They have a very unfortunate habit of getting bent or knocked off during the build which can lead to the invention of all types of new swear words! Ask me how I know! As an additional issue, as in the case of this kit, they also can get in the way and make it difficult to reach areas for filling and sanding. From the look of your photos, it appears as though you may need to do a bit of this in the belly area between the wheel wells. The doors may prove to be troublesome if you are trying to sand that area. If they have already been glued on, don't worry about it, you will manage. But for future builds, leaving them off will make your life easier! I imagine it probably tells you to attach them at this point in the instructions. For some reason most manufacturers will have you adding things like landing gear mid build which is just silly! Agreed, there are rare occasions where the design of the kit necessitates the installation mid build, but most kits they can be installed at the end. Generally try and leave all sticky-outy type things off until the end. These include such things as landing gear and associated doors, radio masts, pitot tubes, access doors, and things of that nature. Leaving them off also makes it easier to paint and detail them rather than trying to do it with them attached to the aircraft. Ok, hope I haven't waffled on too much, just wanted to try and help out someone new to the wingy thing! If you already know all this and you have done it for a specific reason, then please ignore everything i just said!! ;D In general though it looks great so far, and I like the paintwork on your pilot! I look forward to seeing it unfold! Cheers, Sam

Quick update for ya all im still at the filling and sanding stage on this one as the wings did not like being stuck to the fuselage im up to the 2nd filling stage then a wet sand and primer while the filler was drying i made myself a painting jig for the Jug this will be used for the Tammy Jug too when i get her not much too show but hopefully it should be picking up momentum soon :/ not 100% happy with the wing joins but it will have too do A few shots of the jig: Dan B

Thats coming along nicely. Wing joins can often be a pain, but that looks ok.
Good idea for the jig. I have been meaning to make one myself, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It does look very handy.

It's fighting you all the way mate but I think you're winning!
Neat, low cost jig, I'm book marking this as I may need something similar myself.
Keep going fella!

Dan, i am pretty new to Alclad's myself, only used it twice. It does take a bit of work and some patience, but the results are great.

Dan,as I've said to you before,I don't get on too well with the Alclads, but the secret with these,as with all metallics is the preparation, and a smooth basecoat, usually gloss black. Then just 'mist' coats, until you get the desired effect.Don't go heavy, and you don't even need to polish!!!

Hello Dan, You look like you're doing just fine with a kit that is not an easy one. If you can cut your wing teeth on this kit then you're going to love the Tamiya Jug. I have yet to try my hand at NMF. Alclad is the brand I was thinking of using for an up coming build. So, if you don't mind, I'm going to tag along on this build. Dave

dan looks like you are winning the fight. i dont know if you ran across a plane builder by the handle of pixlater, he shared one time how he did wings. he attached the upper half to the fuse and then when those dried he attached the lower. that has saved me tons of work.

dan about the alclads. remember the prep is the most important part. i use alclads quite a bit. here lately what i am doing is to prep the build, spray gloss black, let that dry for maybe 30 min, then at very low pressure mist on the alclad. you have to be careful not to saturate it, just mist it on, give it a couple of seconds to set and then if needed mist it again. start off the build and move across.
i picked this up off of youtube. there is a dang good sbs on there for using alclads.
