I am starting on the superficial detail on the fuselage and nacelles. With my handy dandy, home made tool I was able to recreate the fasteners for the cowl panels. It's a section of stainless steel hypodermic tubing with one end beveled on the inside and the other end in a small wooden dowel. I place it where I want a fastener, push down and, give a couple of twists of the handle. Violá! Fastener.

Just for clarification.....I am a fastener counter. Not a rivet counter.
Here's the pics of the tool in question, plus a couple more that arrived in the mail today.
The fastener tool. The outer diameter of the tubing is 0.020". I think the inner diameter is 0.016"

A rule for scale.

The next couple of tools are what arrived today. I had been wanting them for some time. Both were ordered from UMM. Quick delivery! I ordered four days ago and here they are. The first is the Rosie the Riveter set. The second in a punch set that will handle material up to 0.080" thick.

Hello Luigi,
The riveter is helping me to establish some rivet lines on the AC. There are subtle lines one can see in photos that are from rivets and not panels.
The tubing came from Small Parts Inc. I went to look for their link and kept coming up with very little. All I could find was a pdf of their old OOP catalog. It turns out they've been bought out by Amazon.com Here's the link for the tubing.

But be warned. This site has A lot of really cool stuff. You could spend a long time looking at stuff that you'll never use but, it's just plain neat!

I spent a bit of time this am going over some rivet lines on the tail and control surfaces. The rivets for the most part on the actual AC are flush. In the pics I've found, the rivet lines give a somewhat "distressed" finish to the skin of the AC. The best way, I felt, was to run these rivet lines to represent the lines on the actual AC. The RtR that I used was 0.65mm. I am hoping the result is a subtle one when finished.


Yes! We have some color laid down. It's only on the landing gear, as the main ones have to go on at the same time the nacelles are attached. The paint is LifeColor and, it was a delight to airbrush. It was thinned with LifeColor thinner.

There is still the dark washes, highlights to be applied. The oleo with be done up with Bare Metal Foil.

From all the builds I've seen, the rivets should be visible but not too much. Probably it's just their size that prevents that too much colour sits into them.

I look forward to seeing you burnishing down BMF on such small areas, I've never tried anything like that

I agree, their size at this scale inhibits their visibility. Also, it looks to be that all of them on the wings and much of the fuselage sit flush with the surface. I was trying to find the pictures that showed the rivets that stood proud. It looks as thought the site that I saw them on went black in the couple of days since I've seen them. Bummer. Though, while looking for those pics, I did find some that may have answered a question that was rolling around in my head. On the main LG, there are parts that structurally are part of the nacelle. These should be zinc chromate green, not the blue that I have them painted. So it looks as though the main LG will have a two tone paint job.

Ahhh the old rivet and panel line discussion    In most cases all but these most used/ checked disappear under paint and grime.  I work close to miliarty jets (Typhoon, Hawk etc) and there are far fewer lines and rivets on these than some kit manufactures put on 1/72 replicas !
Go for what you like the look of Dave, it's artistic license buddy

Good to hear I am not the only one with these home made tools. I made mine about 12 years ago and can't live (build) without them. I ruined several very fine ones made from brass. I need to get some SS tube to replace them.

Yeah, it's that old beaten horse discussion. Panel lines are pretty often overdone on kits. On the cover of the Ginter book for the F7F, there is a great color shot of a gloss blue 'Cat in flight. In this pick you can see the light refracting off of the flush rivet heads allowing you to see the longitudinal rivet lines. On the flat black versions these are obscured by the flat paint. This beast is going to be gloss dark blue. Currently I'm working out what is visually correct and what is artistically correct. Left brain, right brain argument at this time.

A nice bit of progress today. I got the engines painted. They are all done up in Vallejo acrylics with the exception of the base coat of Model Master metalizer Aluminum Plate. I used Vallejo Game Ink Black for a wash between the cooling fins on the cylinders and heads. No weathering or washes yet. I want the paint nice a cured before getting into that.

LOL I bent all of mine so many times already...lol. Snapped a few too. I used my smallest on the KC97. I need to make a really small one for some of the rivets.
How are you making raised rivets ? I made some rivet punching tools, various diameter, about 15 years ago and have punched thousands of rivets with them. Also made my own punch and die sets too.
Soo yeah, I'm in the padded cell next to you...lol

It sounds like you're having a smashing good time in there. I haven't snapped my yet, but, it's going to happen.
I don't have any raised rivets as yet. I am trying to find the reference pic that showed the raised ones and where they are.
