Hi All, Well, not content with just starting one blog I had to start this kit too. It's gonna be pretty much out of the box because I don't have access to all my parts at the moment. Should be a nice build though. If anyone has built this kit and has any tips and advice then it would be most welcomed as its my first F1 build. All I got the time for today was this. I'll get the compressor and airbrushes set up tomorrow so I can start to paint the parts before they are fitted together.

Thank you CB, the problem is I'm feeling really rusty at the moment. I kinda lose confidence in myself especially as I have such a bad memory but I'm sure it'll all come flooding back to me once I get started. I almost started a bike build today but the airbrush job I had planned for it would be too complex with my current setup as there's nothing handy.

Hey Boo The first part of this video is about the Mclaren 4/4 but from about 6 mins onwards, plus 4 other videos, it covers the 1/12th Tamiya Honda RA272. Hope this gives you some ideas. Gag

Hi Boo - I have been working on this kit off and on for the last 6 months or so. Caught the F1 bug last year, can't shake it! Garius Maximus Decimus Meridius (BBD468) asked me to share what I've got so far - glad to oblige! I've pretty much taken it slowly and followed the kit instructions on assembly and painting to the letter. Pics of the car from the 60s that are useful seem hard to come by, but there are plenty on Google of the restored version. You will notice the restored version has a black with gold hue metallic wheel set that does not have the silver rims. I have gone that route, as I am just not steady enough and don't have the proper tools to recreate that silver rim on the wheels. Here are a few images I am using as a guide to supplement what I can find of the restored car on Google: Again, I have followed the instructions pretty much to the letter, as well as the paint codes. I have used Tamiya acrylic semi-gloss black in areas that call for any black (tougher than Tamiya flat black and can then be glossed or flattened as needed with clear), and shot the engine with Tamiya acrylic aluminum. The silvery-gold was painted by hand with a brush using Vallejo acrylics (so much easier to brush paint, esp. with Vallejo). Engine was washed with thinned out MIG Dark Wash after painting was complete. The body was shot from the rattle can with Tamiya Racing White (TS-7) after heating the can in hot water. The paint came out fantastic (was nervous about shooting out of the can, but no regrets!), and was then polished with Tamiya Polishing Compounds. (Sorry, the model is a little dusty right now in photos from sitting around for a few months.) The black area on the body but behind the dash was tricky as it is molded in. I used a wash of MIG Dark Wash to flow around the curve and once dry, painted in by hand the rest - easy solution to getting a nice, crisp edge on the curve. The seat was simply done by masking and shooting the grays with airbrush as specified in the instructions. Dash and steering wheel, pretty straight forward - will need some touch-ups once installed. The bottom of the car - I painted all the silver by hand with thinned silver enamel. I used enamel because I wanted to brush it and it being such a large area, acrylic silver is just tough to brush paint nice. After the silver dried, I put a black wash down in the "grooves", etc. Some more photos: Finally - I am using Model Factory Hiro products for the engine wires, tubes, etc. I bought mine from BNA Model World via the Internet. I have since discovered Mac's Modelling and will be buying future detail supplies such as this from him (http://www.macsmodeling.com) - first rate store! I show below where I have drilled the intake for the fuel lines and the last photo shows what all I am using for tubing, wires, etc. I am hoping to resume this build soon. I have a few decals left to place (using Micro-Sol and Mirco-Set by the way), some red touch-ups on the Hinomaru logo, finishing of the wiring, etc., and a gloss coat then polish. I usually build tanks with the occasional plane and figure thrown in and it has been years since I've done a car. But, I have found that even though the exercise is different, if you can paint and build clean, this has really been pain free and straightforward - not to mention a GREAT change of pace. Good luck and I hope this helps a bit. KG

Oh, one other thing - I don't know if any of you guys are big into cars and racing (like me!), but you might want to check this out. iRacing is a really awesome racing sim that is well worth the $. I have been a member for two years - BBD468 would tell you that I am addicted and it cuts into my modeling time - and I have to admit he is right. Anyhoo - any day now they will be releasing a new car to the service - the famous Lotus 49. I have included a link to a video of it on YouTube - go to about 1:10 in the video to see it in action - CAN'T WAIT! www.youtube.com/watch?v=fydNRerL7cA&feature=youtu.bewww.iracing.com

Gary, thanks so much for pointing your nephew this way and good to have you here T, ER, Joe, Andy, Spud, Boots, good to have you along fella's, its surprising how popular this kit is. The classic F1 cars are pretty awesome though Prof, cheers buddy, good to know Gag, thanks a lot for that video stuff, some really inspiring builds on those and I've subbed to them now. Kyle, Wow, what can I say. That's awesome buddy, thank you so much for posting all that. Karma has been sent your way. Your experiences with the kit and the choices you've made will help me so much with this build. I've lost a lot of my reference material in the house move which included a few pictures I'd printed of this Honda. I've also mislaid a bunch of Hiroboy extra's like the tubing. At the time I bought it I didn't know what sort of size I'd actually need so I got a bit of everything and now I'll just have to resort to stripping down some old wires, I'm sure I'll get some decent pieces. After I opened this box and took a good look at the parts I realised I'd probably over estimated the size I'd need anyway. It's a tiny kit isn't it and the amount of detail you've got into your build and painting is brilliant, I hope I can get even half way as good as yours. I'm so excited about this build now and that's thanks to you. I'll take my laptop up to the loft and use this as a guide, I'm so grateful, thanks again Kyle Fella's : I got my compressor and AB's set up today, which may sound rather pathetic but it did take up a lot of my time as I had to sort out all the drawers and then I couldn't find my AB lube oil. My brushes have gone a bit stiff with the cold conditions they've been in. I gave up looking after a few hours and I'll have to pay a visit to Everything Airbrush this week. BUT I got another hour and a half on this build and have got the engine and exhausts ready for mounting on sprue for painting. BUT I can't find all my old sprue bits so I'll have to make a load of new ones. Lol this is pathetic and I'm never moving house ever again. I got some pics of the progress but I'll post them tomorrow when there's more to actually show. The fit is great though, typical Tamiya and I can't wait to get back to it Mark.

Robbo, nice one fella, its good to have you along. I'll look forward to seeing even more of your build Kyle. I'm getting sorted slowly and I installed an old shed shelving unit today to organise my 'useful boxes'. I come across my stash of wires in those so I will try to add some wiring to the engine tomorrow. I got my expo paint extractor installed today which wasn't straight forward but in such a small space I reckon I did ok with it. For the time being I'll be relying on the filters rather than an outlet which is not ideal but needs must. I lost all my electricity in the loft today as the extension I was using has damaged the plugs somehow. Every plug that I plugged it into has gone down so I will grab a new extension in the morning and I'll have to look into the plug issue. Maybe an overheating problem as the wire does get quite hot ? Obviously no update because of this but I'll get sorted, please bear with me.

Too right Dicky, its a fab build and I'll be more than overjoyed to achieve anywhere close to what Kyle has done. Thanks buddy Now that I have had some time with the kit and the reference material has been compared there's lots of things that could be added to this kit to make it even better. But I reckon I'd rather go up to the 1/12 scale F1 cars as my eyesight couldn't cope with upgrading this one. I'm definitely planning on some bigger builds in the future.

I'm still after the Matra MS11, like rocking horse poo.
Hopefully Tamiya will pull their usual stunt of a re-release with some PE thrown in, that would make me a very happy bunny!
