1/35 Hobby Boss M1070 HET w/ M1000 Trailer

Hey guys, some of you may know me from my lingering around here on MSC a little bit and some of you may know me from SMA. I feel bad that I haven't really posted much here as I should so I wanted to get you guys up to speed on one of my current projects. It is the 1/35 HET and Trailer. I also purchased the Eduard Interior kit as the kit itself doesn't have seat belts. I also purchased a set of Def Model Resin wheels.


My plan of attack is to build the trailer first. I've come across a few builds online that did it this way and I think that will be the way to go.

Here is the review of the Def Model Resin Wheels compared to the Kit Wheels.

The Kit wheels are nice. Raised Details is nice, but there is a seam line:

Def Model Box is nice and sturdy!!!


Masking instructions for the 9 included masks: (1 for each of the 8 tractor wheels and the spare)

Resin Spare Tire vs Kit:





and this is the only thing I don't like. The resin pouring block right in the middle of the tread. I'm going to have to figure out how the heck to remove that one...


Resin Tractor vs Kit:
Nice thing with the resin is that all 8 wheels have a different "bulge point" so that each wheels is contacting the surface at a different spot on the tire.




Trailer wheels:
I actually like the smaller detail on the resin ones. They seem more "scale" to me.



My overall impression is that these are not "copies" of the kit wheels. There are some really nice fine details you wont get with the kit. Like I said, I only see one downside, that is the pouring block on the resin wheel. Other than that they are extremely nice. Worth the $100, for me yes. For you, up to you to decide.

Hobby Boss did their freaking homework on this thing! The first thing I noticed when I went to start on the trailer was the why H.B. packed the kit. All of the sprues containing the trailer parts are on one half the box!!! It was a pleasant surprise not having to jump all over the place searching sprue after sprue, especially with all the parts in this thing.

Anyways, I started with the Trailer, which begins with the goose-neck:


This is the first part the instructions have you make. It is the bottom rear section of the goose-neck that will be attached to the bed of the trailer.

Next is the little hydraulic pump:


Then comes the support beam things molded in two pieces. At first I said "crap" seam lines to sand. But I read a few pages ahead. H.B. has literally hid all the seams and pin marks that I have found so far. I knew this kit was good, but I really am blown away. Also, the fit has been great and the styrene has been very easy to work with.

The major structure is complete, pluming added, and the stairs have started to go on.

For those of you that are going to build the kit, be prepared as the plumbing took me FOREVER!!!

You will notice that the kit is designed to be movable so everything is constructed that way. Two pics show different positions so far.



And for those of you wondering just how big this Bad @ss is...
Just the goose neck is 6 inches long!!!

I was able to complete the rest of the major goose neck assembly.

At this point I decided to give the hand winch a shot. I am so glad I used the microfilamient braided fishing line. 2 reasons. 1. It looks much more to scale the the thread the kit included. 2. The kit didn't include enough thread to wrap it around the winch drum so it would have looked pretty weird anyways.

I didn't do it on purpose but when I tied down the hook it added some tension to the pulley system which now I think looks kinda cool!

Seriously, the trailer is massive!



In all reality I wish I had more of a SBS build log for you guys detailing every section of the build but there really are no problems to speak of. I'm sure that there are issues some guys could point out but I'm really not finding any. There are a few things to look out for but they don't seem like problems with the kit to me. I.E. Some of the larger pieces that make up the trailer seem almost warped, not twisted, but just not perfectly flat. I'm assuming this is normal given the fact that some of the pieces are so large. It's nothing that Tamiya extra thin and a little bit of pressure wont fix. Other than that, its really just been taking my time dry fitting and reading the instructions. There is NOTHING complicated about the build so far.

In fact, I can honestly say that this has been one of the more fun builds I've done so far. I'm actually having so much fun I want to get a 2nd kit at the start of next year so that I'll have another one to put a kit on.

Thanks ER. The kit really does pack a lot of detail. It's hard to find anything wrong with it. I'm sure I could if I really tried but that's no fun for me. I blame the decision to buy the wheels on T, he said they would look good on there. Well, that at least what I told my wife.

Krazy Kool Kit !!!Hopefully those pore blocks can end up on the bottom of the tire . I couldnt see it for sure but it looked like you twisted the mono filament to give a "cable" look to it ?

Hey guys,

Thank you all for taking a look!

In terms of the wheels, Def Models did a great job, they spun each tire so that the bulge point is different on each tire. Gives it a much more realistic look as it sits static. In terms of the pour blocks they are all on the bottom, even the spare tire is set up so that the pour block connection will be hidden.

In terms of the braided filament it already had a "cable" look to it. No extra work needed on my part. ;D The kit gives a little piece of string which obvioulsy wouldn't do.

There are a few more winches on the tractor that the kit also gives string for. No bueno. Lucky for me a friend of mine is going to help me make up some cable using the Armor Farm products. ;D We all know how great their stuff is, but I'll make sure to post some pictures up before the wires go on the kit.

Hello all,

Just a quick update from last night's build. I found a small inconstancy in the kit instructions that I want you guys to know about. Comes under Step 8 on the trailer build.

You will see here that this step shows the large tab on Q28 goes opposite of the large open space on the bottom of the trailer.



I did a dry fit at this point and it just didn't look right to me so I skipped ahead in the directions and found that the large tab in Q28 should go in the large open space on the trailer.



This is how it should look:



Also, the kit asks the builder to attach the shackles at this point. I decided to attach them later.

I've decided that I'm never going to pick apart a kit ever again!!! There is way too much work that goes into finding all the errors with a kit from instructions to pin marks etc. I've decided that I'm only going to look at the positive and fun parts of builds and if I find a problem in the process I will share it. I've found I'm enjoying everything about building models a lot more fun this way.
