Seriously good work! I don't have the patience or talent to do this sort of think, but I certainly love watching people who do!! Cheers, Sam

Bit-o-progress. Most of the major work has been done. I've added the weld beads and casting numbers along with the T-62 fuel tanks. As close as the rear may look, I'm off on the thickness/height of the panels by 1-2mm. The exhausts (not shown) sit too high and I'll need to do something clever there. The turret frame took a bit of work to ID parts even with good ref images. There are five parts from five different donor kits in the original. The A -Frame on top had to be scratchbuilt as I didn't have the donor kit for that one. Everything else it legit. I even started clipping parts of the LeRhone kit sprues. More Le-Rhone kit bits sitting on top of non-legit Matlida parts. Gun breech kicks off the turret interior. I greeblied this up from misc. stuff from the spares bin. The intake doo-dad at the bottom of the image is from the SAFS replaces the bit from the MD500 which has no details. See top image. I also cleaned off the bullet splash guards and need to replace. I had to punch up the levels to make out this detail. The area behind has been prepainted black as it will be difficult to get any paint up under there when all the bits are installed. I still need to clip out the rest of the bits and scratch some missing parts.

Thanks all. I got some good model time in this weekend but it was divided among three projects so neither one made it very far. I've started adding some of the smaller details and prepping parts for pre-paint before they get installed and I'll never be able to get paint down in there.

I'm slightly confused - thought you were scratchbuilding something, but are you trying to copy something? Specifically, I mean, like part-for-part? If that's the case, I'm wondering if you're working off of a set of plans? Great work, btw, especially with the whole puttied-up nose.

Dupes - It's a scratchbuild trying to copy an original design by Kow Yokoyama as part of his SF3D series. You can see an image of it on the first page. There are other photos available in different books and a few photos online of the original when it is shown at events. If a hardcore desperate enough MaK fan wants to build something that hasn't been kitted, they have to resort to MaK Archeology tm to figure out what kits were used in the original. I built a lot of armor kits when I was younger so I am familiar enough with many of the Tamiya armor kits Kow used. In this case, the 8-RAD and T-62 parts were basically freebies. Some of the other parts required a few more photos and some close ups. Other guys know more about aircraft kits, still others know more about cars or out of production 1/9 scale motorcycle kits from an unknown Korean model company from the 70s. Crazy stuff. Kow used everything and depending on how "accurate" you want to get, you have to invest some time and resources to find just the correct one. We put our heads together and can usually get most of a design identified. I know a guy that bought 4 different 1/72 scale F4U Corsairs to find THE one. Some of Kow's originals use 20-30 unique donor kits. Most of the time only one or two parts from the kit is used so needless to say, I have a lot of kit boxes with 5-6 pieces nipped off the sprue. It's a different approach since the inside needed to be accessible for greeblies. Otherwise I would have used the chunk of foam approach I did last time on my "MaK Inspired" build.

AHHHHHHHHH...it's all making sense now - sort of like trying to duplicate an original AT-AT studio model! Would be interested to see the complete list of stuff that's "supposed" to go into one of these guys.
I remember the chunk o' foam method from the last one. Certainly seems like it would cut down on a lot of work.

AHHHHHHHHH...it's all making sense now - sort of like trying to duplicate an original AT-AT studio model! Exactly! Unfortunately we are often looking for the same OOP donor kits on ebay and you just can't win a bidding war against those guys. They're hardcore. I'm more practical about it. Get as close as I can with kits I find at a "reasonable" rate and scratch the rest. Sometimes it takes me years to get all the necessary kits. A few of his models use a Pocher Rolls Royce Phantom. Won't be building those any time soon. Me too but I don't know all of it. This is one of his more manageable designs to reverse engineer though. Try to tackle the Schenkle! That will bring you to your knees. Here is the recipe list for the SandStalker that I know so far. 1/35 232 Tamiya - main body and details 1/35 T-62 " - fuel tanks and details 1/35 222 " - details 1/35 Krupp Protz " - side and misc. mechanical details 1/48 MD500 Hasegawa - donates 1 part 1/76 JagdTiger - Fujimi - donates 1 part hidden on bottom 1/12 CB750 Motorcycle Tamiya - side mechanical details 1/8 LeRhone Radial engine - Hasegawa - donates 3 whole parts. Big woop! 1/76 Sherman EZ8 - Fujimi(?)donates 2 parts 1/12 Indy Racer - Tamiya - misc. bottom and side details 1/15 Motorcycle - details unknown - misc. bottom details and top A frame 1/24 Nissan - details unknown - rear "jets" This build I did of the FireFly might be a fun exercise for you to ID some kit parts. In some cases, multiples of the same kit were used. I'll probably use it again with the Sand stalker 222.

Other than the fact that the pit is most likely the same 1/48 Hasegawa MD500 from above, I can't find much - which is a good thing! Did a great job disguising the "sourced" parts. Nothing worse than looking at a scratchbuild and saying, "look, another Panther roadwheel".
Freakin' sweet build there!

Thanks! Actually the pit is a 1/32 BO 105 Heli. www.hobbymasters.com/Italeri-1-32-601-BO-105-PAH-1-Helicopter-Model-Kit.aspxBest thing to happen to that kit was to be used in the Firefly. Other kits used are the Tamiya Churchill Croc, Matilda, Krupp Protz, Field Kitchen, Chi Ha & T-62. Main wing section is a highly prized big bucks 1/12 indy racer. As expensive as these limited run MaK resin garage kits are, they are FAR cheaper than gathering up all the necessary donor kits.

At least I got the helicopter part right! Like I said, good job disguising stuff...I didn't pick out ANY of those Tamiya kits from there.

Basic paint, markings and first unifying filter. Being inspired by Volker Bembennek's Bishop for the finish. Markings are mix of decals, dry transfers, and sprayed stencils. Looking forward to chipping and weathering. Should be fun. Stowage is in progress.

Thanks all. Lots of filters and LOTS of little paint chips applied with either a torn sponge or 10/0 brush. Some of the hull scratches are a little iffy and need a little more work. I knocked out the paint stand so the model "floats" in the photos. Is what it is. The front tow loops and a few other items were added at the last min so only have a base coat of paint. Stowage is in progress and figure(s) are in the planning stage.
