I will be using this 1/10th Scale figure bust from Young Miniatures this weekend for a painting demonstration at a IPMS show in the local area. Since I only have an hour, topics will cover painting the eyes, basic flesh mixtures and layering techniques. I will be using Vallejo and Andrea acrylics. It should be a lot of fun!

Well, I was unable to make the show due to a family medical emergency and I had to leave town for a few days. Back home now and things are close to normal again. So I thought, why not do a SBS here over the next couple of weeks with this figure! Step #1. I base coated the Face (two thin applications) with Vallejo Beige Red which is my preferred color to start with. Step #2. I painted the eyes with Vallejo Sand and let dry for a few minutes. Then using Andrea Flat Black I painted in the iris's - you can slop a bit of paint above and below the eye socket since you will "cut it" back in the upcoming steps. Step #3 Using Vallejo Field Blue paint the inside of the iris making sure to leave a black outline. When dry and using a 2/0 DaVinci brush I painted the pupils. Step #4 To cut back the overpaint on the upper eyelid I used Vallejo Mahogany Brown in a thin line which also creates your first shadow. Using the Beige Red, paint the lower eye bag to clean up and define the eye shape. MORE SOON! Dave

Tomorrow's post will continue with painting the eyes, applying washes, varnish and the clean up and proper alignment - I need to balance the eyes a bit better!

Okay, made a bit of progress today. Step# 5 I applied a very thin wash of Andrea Dark Red to the inner corners of the eyes to replicate the tear ducts then after that dried added another very, very thin wash of Vallejo Smoke over the entire eye areas. When that dried ( I use a low powered hair dryer to speed things up) and added a touch of Vallejo gloss varnish. Step# 6 Using Color # 4 (kind of a rust brown shade) from the Andrea Flesh paint set I begin to add the basic areas of shadow: the sides of the nose, inner ears, eye bags, laugh lines and brow. Very thin coats were used to just define the areas for future work. Step# 7 I painted the upper lip with Color # 6 from the same set (a very dark reddish brown) and the lower lip with a mix of Vallejo Beige Red and Vallejo Dark Red, then highlighted on the outer edges with the Beige Red. Step# 8 First layer of highlights applied with a mix of Vallejo Beige Red and Flat Flesh to the area just below the eye bag, forehead and the bridge of the nose. It is important to keep the paint very thin but do not use too much water or you will get "tide marks" that are very difficult to remove. Step# 9 Using only thinned Flat Flesh and working in a smaller area I continue to add the highlights - NOTE: I am only working the left side of the face for comparison - I would normally do both left and right at the same time! Step# 10 First application of the 5 o'clock shadow tones applied by mixing Vallejo Prussian Blue and Beige Red and stippled on using (again!!!) a very thin mixture. More Soon!!!

A bit more progress this weekend. Step# 11 Repeated the previous steps for the right side of the face. Step# 12 Mixed Vallejo Dark Red and Beige Red and applied the first layer of coloring to the hollows of the cheeks. Next steps will involve the clean up of the highlights, then start to add more shadow color.

I've started on the painting of the tunic and web gear with all of the base colors blocked in. The base colors for the tunic are a mix of Vallejo English Uniform and Light Mud, web gear a mix Splinter Camo and Desert Yellow, and the ammo belt a mix of Tan Yellow and Iraq Sand - all shaded with various amounts of Burnt Umber. Now it's time time to dirty it up!
