I was wondering if you can use anything else besides Photobucket that might be free? I see now Photobucket seems to require a monthly or yearly fee. Was free last I used it. Which was quite a while ago now:)

I have a Dropbox account but I don't see where to directly share to the forum. Is there something I'm missing? Anybody familiar with this?
I tried to copy the image address but it took you to Dropbox which isn't really what we want.

Well this worked and I added straight from my computer. I thought this wouldn't work? If this is the case do we need a photo sharing web site like Photobucket?

Is the above picture too big? Should the pics be a certain maximum size?

Since Photobucket started charging for use, and ruining virtually every forum enthusiasts collective day, other image hosting sites that were free are hard to come by. As a forum owner who experienced this first hand, I did an exhaustive search and came by Postimages! It free and has no limits. Whereas you can just bring the site up and upload pictures that can be ported into any forum, it is far better to take the time and make an account first… it’s free, to do that… and in this way, you can also maintain separate file folders by subject! I do this for my individual model, miniatures, and game design projects, and it works flawlessly. Once you get the swing of it, it’s fast and easy. I’m taking the liberty to post below, the instructions I have up at my forum. I hope it helps!
First, create an account at Postimages at their website postimages.org by clicking the “Sign Up” button. Once you have an account, you can keep all your pictures in a giant heap… but it’s better to create folders for the subject. For instance, mine has folders for individual model builds, but I also have a folder for games where I have many game shots in there. It’s your preference. There is also, a default folder where you can keep random stuff.
Here’s an example of my account…

IMPORT AN IMAGE
So say you have a picture in your computer’s photo gallery that you just snapped for a game or model, and you want to post it to a thread on the forum. You first need to import it into Postimages.
Open your Postimages account and choose (or create) a folder you want to place the picture in. In the picture above, say I wanted to post a bunch of pictures to my already created Battlestar Galactica Recon Viper folder…
1. I click on that folder to open it up 2. I click the “Upload” button at the top …WARNING! Be sure to click the “Upload” button between the two blue buttons (to the right of that Upgrade button). If you use thr Upload button at the very top of the page, next to the postImages logo, the image will go into your Default folder!

…note that the white button will turn blue! Like this…

3. You will then see a pop up box that will let you “Choose images”. Click that and you will then have a pop up box with three options… you want the “Photo library” choice. 4. Select the photos you want to import and click “Add”. All those selected photos will dump right into that folder!
POST AN IMAGE TO YOUR THREAD OR POST
Ok, so you now have your photos in your Postimages account and you want to post them to your forum thread or post. Say I wanted to post the ‘Finish 4’ picture in that Postimages folder…
5. Click on the image and you will see two options pop up: one looks like a little less-than sign with dots on the ends and verticese, which is the one you want in order to get the URL to copy (the other option is a trash can symbol to delete the picture)…

6. Click on the copy symbol (the funny less-than sign), and a pop up box will appear! 7. Of the choices listed, you want the “Hotlink for forums” choice. Click on the little page icon at the far right of the URL and it will copy the URL to your computer’s clipboard!

8. Go back to the forum to the post you are working on and paste (I use Control P on my keyboard) the photo where you want that image to appear in your post, and Bammo! …you photo is in your forum post! In the example above, I’ll post the ‘Finish 4’ photo below…

It really is that simple, folks!

Last autumn I decided to try my luck with MS One Drive. 1Gb is for free if you have a MS account.

I too use Postimages. After reading Whiterook's well done post you'll have all the needed information to setup and post from your account. As you use the site it will become so fast that it is almost as quick as inserting similes from the tool bar above. Reminder: it is FREE! postimages.org/

I came to post a "where do people host pics thread", and found this. Excellent tutorial! I need to get a postimages account set up.

Is IMGUR not a thing anymore? It is, but the problem with the majority of image hosting sites is, you’ve got to pay a monthly fee beyond the paltry free startup. Postimages is the way to go, IMHO… unlimited storage with reasonable bandwidth restrictions

My problem with Postimages, like imgur, is that it arbitrarily assigns file names, which won't work for me because I also maintain my own website and inconsistent file names are a nightmare. I wish I was wrong about the filenames, make it so!

With more and more browsers requiring secure (https) addressing some people can't see my images, and my ISP doesn't support that. The cure is to move my website, which is a big job, many hundreds of pages. So a short term fix would be nice that would not create extra work.

My problem with Postimages, like imgur, is that it arbitrarily assigns file names, which won't work for me because I also maintain my own website and inconsistent file names are a nightmare. I wish I was wrong about the filenames, make it so! I’m not the most techie person in the world so, I’m not sure I’m understanding the issue? Since Postimages stores pictures on their site, and allow you to merely copy “Hotlinks for forums”, which is the URL name… the link to Postimages URL, the simple solution is to maintain your pictures in a file folder on your computer and upload to Postimages…then place the link in your editor here in MSC’s Proboards site. It’s the same process at my forum… Perhaps your trying to work with creating a thread in your own website and then porting it over here in a copy paste? With more and more browsers requiring secure (https) addressing some people can't see my images, and my ISP doesn't support that. The cure is to move my website, which is a big job, many hundreds of pages. So a short term fix would be nice that would not create extra work. I’m not sure I understand the browser issue, either …if we’re taking a picture ti be posted here within an editor writeup, the Postimages URL link has never failed to work for me on Proboards, vBulletin, phpBB3, and others… they’ve showed up in Windows rigs, MAC, Apple iPad, cells. You’ve a very confused guy here Please note, I’m not trying to sound flips here… just trying to understand and help.

I'm happy to have your input! There is no issue with Postimage working for posting on any of the forums, it's an issue with having consistent image naming on my website. It's very much slower to write html code if all the images are named randomly as Postimage and others do. For instance, my first image might be 0011pby.jpg, the second 0021pby.jpg. Otherwise you have to keep copying and pasting the random names, and if an error in naming is made the troubleshooting is far easier with consistent naming. One thing I am not comfortable with is having my photos on a site I have no ownership of, any one of them can go all Photobucket on us at any time. The method I am most happy with is where the forum allows us to drag the image from our computer to the website.
