I think the dots are stenciled on, some kind of derivate from the ambush disc pattern. There are also the cloudy forms around the large blotches. Eddy, disc pattern was sometimes applied over regular pattern in the aftermath or even mixed up. There is an interesting pic of a Bergepanzer III in a "Panzerwrecks" issue.
However, the lower front plate doesn't have the same pattern, so it may be even thinkable the engine deck didn't have it as well and only the new superstructure was painted that way.
An attractive mix from modeller's POV!
Cheers, Tobi

Interesting that the pattern on that one SturmT doesn't extend to the hull nose past the glacis...but then it would be 'low visibility' regardless, so not as important. As for the engine deck, since it's visible from the air, my vote would be for it to also get the ambush stenciling, but the argument could be made either way I suppose. As for needing to counter the effect of Future darkening a finish per Dupes' comment, there's no real need to do that as once you apply washes/filters and then seal with a Flat coat, the residual darkening effect caused by the Future gloss finish goes away and doesn't serve as a 'layer' in the finish in any meaningful way IMHO. The real need to lightening a base coat is to counter or anticipate the inevitable alterations that will come in the weathering process.

Whew ! Great answers and info my friends .Eddy I hadn't noticed that the camo was hard edged before you commented on it .Tobi I also hadn't noticed the cloud forms .Normally I don't give that much sway into building and painting per historical references but in this case you guys have very patient with my armature attempts so I'll go at this while taking into consideration all of your comments . I agree about the matt coat lightening the over all effect Bill so I'll keep that in mind . Well back to the drawing / thinking / speculating / what if-fing board/ bench / Time for more coffee !

I found this photo of a soft edge camo'd Sturm with dots of what looks to be the base color dunkelgelb . Maybe sprayed on freehand .This could be a good fit for my model ? I've seen some models with these dots in the olivgruen and rotbraun , I'm not sure if the later is accurate . Opinions ? If not I'll go with the dots in the base color of dunkelgelb .

I sprayed the dots . They're not randomly shaped as much as I wanted . I'm sure further weathering will tone them down and alter the shapes a bit .

It's interesting that even with a count of only 12 vehicles there were differences in camo.
I think you did capture it well. Word of advice for the future: don't do a dark washing on Zimmerit surfaces, as it will become too dark and overall doesn't look very realistic.
It's not me telling this, this is by Mig Jimenez, and one has to respect that he is an international award winner! Anyway, I fully share his opinion in this case.
Cheers, Tobi

Hey my friends its good reading your comments ! It took me several hrs to get those little pisky dots done to my satisfaction . I sprayed thru 3 different sizes of holes cut in folded masking tape and held about a 1/4 inch off the surface . Tobi , I've seen some of Mig models and I fully agree with your respect for his opinions. I looked at the wash on the zimm this am and I agree that it looks over done and a few shades too dark . It hasnt been sealed yet and it will be a sincth to redo . Stay tuned for more pics later on today when i get back to the cave bench . ps , Pete ! I missed your post the first time . Thanks for the comment my friend .

Thanks Nems , I always wanted to be called a "mucker " . Bill , them spots was a pain . Andy my son thanks for the comment . Now go to bed ! Deano , much appreciated . I removed some of the Burnt Umber wash from the zimm and then finished the reast of the model with a wash of the same .I had to change the white balance from my previous pics so as to eliminate a tendency for the pic to have an over saturation towards yellow .

Hi Carl, glad to read you were able to revisit the Zimmerit. Too bad I can't see the pictures from work! Our IT would block everything from Photobucket and such... I have to wait until tonight when I'm back home again.
