USS Arizona BB-39 Revell 1/426 USS Arizona
Besides blogging this build here, I have the build with more images on my website. The site will now feature War Ships. www.scratchmod.com/uss-arizona.htmlThe reviews category has been updated and categorized, including 'Warships'. There you will find kit reviews and also reference & discussion boards for various classes of ships, including some ref pics of the Arizona. modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/board/83/naval-warshipsWell since my best bud is doing something that float, or rather goes under water, I might as well try my hand at a floatie. Been a LOOOOOONG time since I built a ship model...a good 30+ years I think. So i found at a yard sale last month this Revell kit new and un opened for a wopping $2. I know it's an old kit but thought what the heck, for 2 bucks you can't go wrong. I know a lot could be done to this model to make her look good but I'm not as crazy as my buddy T, and so I won't replace and railings gun barrels etc, and just have fun painting. It all starts with the hull and here is where I knew from past experience with these old, back then still new, kits and the fit problems with the hull. I glued the two hull halves and added some filler in the huge gaps. Some styrene backing/re enforcement strips helped keep her together while it was filled and will have to dry good. No pics right now but once the filler has dried and the glued fully cured and hard I will remove the tape and snap a pic or two.

I have fond memories of building the Arizona as a kid...and then promptly 'sinking' it repeatedly in the bathtub over the years! Looking forward to seeing you have fun with this one Rob.

Funny that you guys would comment on this thread, because I actually worked on this model late last night.
After a few hours of cleaning the badly injection molded parts, drilling out gun barrels I managed to get a bit done. I had thought about adding more details, like PE hand rails, but figured this is just a 2 dollar kit, and it's an old dog, so no need to get carried away. Also, it has been at least 30 years since I built and painted a ship. I have two old Revell USS Constitution sailing ships, the big kits, in the basement I may tackle one day.

Nice deck progress Rob. I bet drilling out all those tiny gun barrels was fun, worth the effort though!

Looking great!!! Was at Hobby Lobby and they had same kit on sale for $25 or $30. I was tempted but nah, too many kits in stash I need to build first.

Comments are much appreciated fellas. The deck only has three shades of wood for shadows and highlights. I have the wash on the deck and sides of the hull and am working on some 'modulation'. I also tested out a couple of streaks but have to wait until the oils and enamels dry to continue with that.
Will have pics up tomorrow.

Holy cow!!! Looking sharp... is there something you can not build? Maybe a plane? LOL Now I am really tempted to build a ship soon. I have decided on my first ship to build finally... it shouldn't be hard to figure out because it is where I live. USS Indianapolis... gonna look around. Can't wait to see more... please!

Thanks Andy. Fun doing something different. I need to still paint the superstructure, life boats etc. The red lower hull should be fun...not.
USS Indi sounds good dude. I'm thinking a Liberty ship, sub, gunboat or destroyer will be next. Also kind of tossed the idea around in my head of doing the Arizona as it is now with the memorial above it..

I was born in Indy and the ship has a huge story on her. It was either that or the Hornet, but 16 B-25's sound like a bit much! LOL scratchmod... I like the work so far on the Arizona! Keep us up to date on the progress on her. Jeff
