Hi folks, well as I mentioned over on acquizitions I finally managed to bag mself this classic kit; I was surprised with the size of box it came in- about the size of a modern 1/72 scale kit Parts count (including commander figure) comes in at about 78 pieces , plus motors, gears and battery connectors. Needless to say these last bits are going in the bin I was immediately concerned by the look of some of the major components so out came the digital callipers and my Bradford Cold War AFV's. Here's what I found: Hull Length overall seems to be ok but there are some issues with the shape of the front fenders- it may be down to being different versions- the Bradford plans are for the FV601C and the kit is a Mark II (not sure if there is any menaingful difference here- I've not dug out my other Alvis references to check just yet. ) Width: 73.2mm in Bradford vs 73mm on the kit! Result Depth (hull floor to underside of fender ) 25.2mm (Bradford) 24mm (kit)- easily sorted Wheels 30.7 mm (Bradford) 29.7mm (kit) Rims 17 mm (Bradford) 19 mm (kit) Not a lot I can do with these replacements are probably the best bet here Turret Length 57.3mm (B) 54.3mm(k) Width 50.4mm (B) 47.1mm(k) Height 17.1mm (B) 13.5mm(k) - more annoying than anything else - probably the easiest fix tbh. Loads more detail to sort out as well but all in good time ;)not lease of which will be something that approximates the rather intricate suspension Alvis were rather fond of... The gun seems over scale also - replacement barrel for that I think, and also for the .30' mgs -the ones supplied in the kit have a very odd raised dimple in place of the cooling sleeve holes. All in all an intersting build ahead. TTFN P

Yup-well probably- depends, maybe, not sure....
There's some of those dimensions I can and feel able to tackle, others I'll just leave alone.
I Think I'll try to get the airjeep finished and then just focus down on this one- but its probably going to be one for the long haul due to the suspension issues in particular. P

Not exactly a mountain of styrene sprues in the box eh? Regardless, ought to be a fun project Paul, will be watching with interest.

And here I was thinking I had seen every kit Tamiya had cranked out. Wrong again! Should be interesting, to say the least!

OH thats a real oldie Paul, remember this very well it was one of the first Tamiya kit I made when I was a kid , it's made more as a toy than a model kit . Will look forward to this.

Cool! I didn't even know that this kit existed!
Would love to have one of these myself. Maybe it's not up-to-date nor very accurate, but at the end it's simply a Tamiya. When I think back of the old Matilda I did some years ago it still makes me smile...
Watching with interest!

jackwagon- seriously complicated, but also very efficient from what I've read. And if it ain't complicated enough already- you may have noticed the only the front wheels have the recuperators and shock-absorbers above the plane of the drive shafts- both middle and rear wheel stations have it below! Robbo- great to have you along for this- but get comfy cvause its going to last (quite) a while! No pressure on me then Richard- this could be a serious disappointment What have I started here fellas... P

I think a full rebuild of the lower hull tub is going to be necessary with this - the kit version is little more than a rectangular box- which the hull evidently is not. This will then also necessitate scratched fenders :-/I think this is going to end up being more white styrene than kit supplied plastic tbh. P

As part of my ongoing research with this I read somewhare that the Tamiya M113 based AFSV turret is closer to the dimensions of the real deal than this kit. I have a favour to ask: If anyone has one of thse things could I ask if you wouldn't mind taking a caliper to it for the general dimensions (LxWxH)
TIA
Paul
