Well gents, with my Wessex complete (just not photographed proper yet!) it was time to move on to the next big thing. Literally!
My local club kicked off its 1/32 OOB Group Build, so it was time for me to build my first 1/32 aircraft (I built the Hasegawa Spitfire when I was a kid, but I don't really count that one, especially as I painted it with house paint!! ).
My weapon of choice? As you can probably guess from the title, I picked Tamiya's stunning P-51D. Why not start off in style I reckon!
Below is some of the most beautiful artwork to ever grace the lid of a model box. Mmmmm, purrrrty....
Man, Tamiya stuff just oozes quality, don't it??
As I still have an aversion to building shiny metal things (one of these days....) and knew I wouldn't do this beauty justice, I decided to do something a little different. I have had this sheet lying around for a few years now, waiting for the opportunity to give it a crack, so here we are. Gentlemen (and ladies!) I present to you, Passion Wagon!
A close up of the beast in question...
The main decal sheet. The nose checkers are for the Hasegawa and Dragon Mustangs (the Tammy one hadn't been released when this sheet came out). Not sure yet whether I will try and see if one of these fits, or mask and paint...
And finally, the lovely ladies! You get two of each just in case you bugger things up the first time (heaven forbid!!)
So what is the kit like? Words cannot really describe it. These kits may be a bit on the expensive side, but in my mind they are worth every Dollar (Pound? Euro? Baht? Denar? Dirham? Escudo? Florin? Franc? Koruuni? Litas? Ostmark? Rand?........ ). The detail is exquisite, and those fabled engine covers really do need to be seen to be believed. Never have I seen injection molding so thin!! There is detail packed on each and every sprue, and this is one of those kits that will be absolutely stunning straight out of the box and without any aftermarket.
So, here is where I am after an hour or so's work. As with a lot of these sort of kits, you start with the engine. Tamiya does an incredible rendition of the famous Merlin engine, and there is a LOT of it! What you see here is not even half of it, I still have a way to go before the engine is close to done.
Oh, and yes, that is PE you see there. You get a couple of frets of the stuff in the kit.
The destructions show the vast majority of the engine to be semi-gloss black, so the temptation is to get the entire thing together before painting it. I think this would however prove problematic as there are a lot of nooks, crannies and things covering other things which would make airbrushing the entire engine a severe headache at best and a distinct impossibility at worst. I would suggest to build the engine in sub assemblies and then paint and weather before final construction.
OK, well that's all we have at the mo, will post some more when I get a bit more together!
Cheers,
Sam
