Hi guys, here’s a SBS on how I did some old timber boards on the Chevy Pickup just finished. You can’t beat real wood I reckon, and it’s easy enough to find. This board is cut from a paddle pop stick. To make it look old and dried out I added splits by dragging the point of a scalpel along the grain, holding the blade at right angles to the direction of motion to gouge rather than cut into the wood. A wire brush was used to rough things up a bit more, brushing along the grain. Then I used a sanding stick and some fine sandpaper to remove burrs and make edges and features smoothed out. It was painted light grey; I kept the paint thin so it didn't fill the fine details in the wood. Oil paints were used to make washes, I’m sure pre-made ones would work also. A number of thin washes were added allowing the paint to dry before each wash. Finally a little more sanding brought out some highlights. This was another board prepared in the same way but painted white acrylic instead of grey. It had the oil washes as well, then some more effects added after that. The image at the top shows the board after a final dry brush with some Dark Mud oil paint. At the bottom, the dry brushing was wiped off and pigments were rubbed into the wood. I used Mig Productions Ashes White and Black Smoke to make a grey pigment for this, I think an earth color would work too. I guess the point of this last photo was: try some things, see what looks best to you! Cheers JT
