No worries, Luigi. If you're as stretched for time as I am..... Phil, havin' a blast. And I plan for lots and lots of stowage. Really.

Well. My darling wife had a family gathering Friday night, and guess who jumped into the model room..... No matter how bad I'm itching to start something else, like another Magach, or the Achzarit, of maybe even the CharB in the stash, or even another Sherman, I exercised some degree of self-control and stayed on the M579. I have some Spade Ace tracks on the way, and I'm really not that far from being able to get primer on the vehicle itself. The crane is still another matter..... Anyway, I did a bunch of mounts and brackets that I can see in the few pics I have, and a few hull fittings as well. There's a lot of stuff in the pics that I can only guess at their purpose, and some others that are pretty obvious, like the mount for spare road wheels on the hull front. Apparently, brackets are welded to the aluminum hull, and the (probably) steel storage bins, racks and lockers are bolted to the brackets. Makes sense. I represented most of these welds with Vallejo putty, and sliced plastic angle and hex rod for the brackets themselves and the bolts. I still want to do the folding work table that replaces the trim vane on IDF M579s, and a few more exterior detail items, then I need to nut up and do the crane. I'm also undecided on leaving the back ramp down. Enough with the yackin', here's pics. Can't decide on the rear hatch yet, so leaving it workable as long as possible. Also not yet sure on how well the anti-skid inside the ramp will look, I need to put a wash on it to tell.

I promised not to buy myself anything else too...... Dicky, you may be right there, and I spent quite a bit of time cleaning that area up. The wheels are shown stowed "inside-out" in the pics I have and the instructions, but the retainer looks to be molded/tooled so as to have the wheel mounted the opposite way. I'll look again but I thought there was a teeny lip on the inside of the rim for the square piece to grab. It doesn't look very convincing in the pic though, does it? Simple enough fix, which I may do anyway because the spare wheel holder on the front plate will use the same set-up, and I've got to finish it, and that means making some more parts, so I might as well make three instead of one of each. Whew! Luigi, Phil, thanks! I think it's past time for an updated, current-tooling kit. This thing is a bit dated, but I may grab another one anyway, can't really do IDF armor w/o doing one or two of these things.

Phil - We'll buy one for each other and then neither of us have bought ourselves anymore kits eh?! Now that sounds like a plan Dicky!

Well, I went home and looked at the retainers for the two spare M48/60 road wheels, and there's a teeny lip there but not enough to be convincing, so off they came. A little work with a round sanding stick and I was left with smooth holes. I then "imagineered" a couple of mounts using a bit of tube, flat stock and the two bolts and washers shaved off the kit retainers. I'm happier now. I also knocked off the etch water can rack (again) so I left it off and started a rack out of plastic. I never really liked that etch rack anyway.... Pics: Above is before adding the retainers, below after. And my start on the new can rack: I want to finish this thing so I can build a Sherman, get my head straight.

Thanks Pete. It's getting a little tough to stay focused on this one, same thing always happens to me when I start getting close to paint.

Aw, jeez Dicky, you're being an enabler! Luigi, I get the cold sweats when it's P-time. I'm always thinking I missed something that I won't be able to correct or add once P is on.

Thank you somtec. Some of my favorite things to add on older models are the often-neglected welds, bolt heads, and brackets, and with this kit, I'm in hog heaven.

Thanks, Phil. Ladies' night last night, so I built a crane. I guessed on the hydraulic lines, probably pretty close since I have a fair amount of experience in the field. The one thing I'm still in the dark about is how the necessary six lines pass through the top plate. Also painfully obvious now is Academy's complete lack of parts for the necessary hydraulic pump and reservoir to run a crane and winch. Oh well. Also done, the can rack on the back right and the fudged stop for the driver's hatch. It's ready for paint. With the spare M113 wheels, which I may leave off since the mount I made is kinda neat.... New rack: Extended crane: And in traveling position: The crane parts looked like they were from different toolings the fit was so poor, lots of sanding to make things blend. I almost put weld beads where things joined, it would have been just as quick as smoothing the mis-matches.
