Hi there...
I love to play with Photoshop - and to model. Although Im no professional photographer at all (and I guess I never will be ), taking pictures isnt an unneccesary thing. Taking the pictures is one thing, presenting them is another. Heres a little SBS for antique pictures, suitable for planes, tanks, cars, ships, figures - you name it!
Basically all editing softwares use the same tools, but have different names for it. My weapon of choice here was and still is Photoshop Elements 9.0 - thats totally enough for purposes like these!
First of all we need a picture of course - here its the Maschinenkrieger Falke.
Then I made it black & white, after all corrections and retouchings were done:
Now comes the fun part! Add a new layer, make it brownish with the filling tool (bucket) and... turn down lucency. 30-35% lucency should be enough.
You dont have to, but for a more realistic look you can add additional layers of old paper, pergament etc. Like that one for example - tone it down too, again 20-25% lucency should be okay:

Well done! Now you can use the etching tool and work the borders and the objects you want to highlight. The etching tool can be equipped with several tops - just have a try. If you want, you can add additional layers for coffee stains, spilled ink etc.
And thats it - no witches involved here!
If you want to know more about the Falke build... here it is:

EDIT: For a good start, here are some links for the patterns... Please note that some of them may have a watermark due to copyright.
