I'm a bit late posting the build thread, I am finally posting my build of this rusty Russian personnel carrier. I took build up pics as I was going but I am damned if I know where they are. I completed the majority of the construction while on a bit of a family getaway. My wife and daughter go to bead early so I got to catch up on a bit of modelling. I have been known to take modeling gear with me on various occasions. Sometimes it is just a knife, file, sprue cutters and glue, other times it's more sophisticated. At least it lets me get something done. That said I think SWMBO may have gotten a bit annoyed at my modelling on holiday, which may explain where my pictures went......Oh well. I picked this kit up ages ago for $10, and has been built OOB with the exception of a couple of wire grab handles and couple of bullet dents in the rear. I plan on building it as a type of derelict Kabul BTR-70. I have no knowledge of Soviet armor so please go easy on me for those that do, as I basically picked what parts had the most visual appeal, and may not be an accurate combination. I will also be avoiding any use of PE or aftermarket goodies, mainly due to a conversation in one of the threads about the growing cost of the hobby, and the possibility of building a decent looking kit with just the basics. DISCLAIMER - Under no circumstances am I saying that my builds are decent. I will be using this build as a test bed for weathering techniques that I have yet to really try out. She'll be a dusty rusty derelict but mostly intact as I didn't want to waste time with a lot of kit bashing. Any way here it is languishing in primer until I can ge the other two kits I am working on (for the Game of Drones GB) ready for paint as well. Also, I just realised yesterday that Imageshack is now a paid only service with a 30 day free trial. I had been using those guys for ages but don't think I want to pay a subscription for image hosting. Does any body know of a good, free image hosting service? I considered photobucket but I have heard they have bandwidth issues if you don't pay for a subscription. For now I am using the forum's default image uploading service but I think it only posts thumbnails. As I mentioned before the kit is OOB. Some of the grab handles looked pretty bad in plastic (I was going for a complete OOB build) so I took them off, filled the holes and replaced them with wire. The fit isn't great, so I added weld seams where appropriate and left the gaps that won't be seen as this will be firmly affixed to a base when finished. Cheers, Brett T

And we've seen your Venator build - no disclaimer needed, sir.

Way too cool, even if the kit is not at trumpeter's level at all. Can't stay away from a BTR, count me in. If you need pics from Afghanistan, you only have to ask

Well it has been a long time between drinks for this build, but at the moment my bench time is measured in minutes - not hours. I have prepped the hull for a severe case of rust bucket, but have to do a bit of practice first. So after soaking up the contents of the FAQ books, and a lot of the rust bucket builds here on MSC, started practicing on some old Tamiya fuel drums. This is the first one I tried with the HS technique and ended as a bit of a failure: These three were a bit more successful. The blue one had the blue dabbed on with a sponge, the middle one is a better example of the HS technique, and the last one was chipped with german grey and a fine paint brush. I have one more that I am working one and is looking quite promising. I'll post that up when it is finished. Hopefully soon I will be confident enough to get on with the BTR - time is running out after all. Cheers, Brett

- Thanks man. This type of weathering is something that I am pretty weak on so it's time to get the big boy pants on and have a shot. Nice take on the weathering of the barrels - Thanks for the props. I am not happy with the outside two but the centre one turned out okay. I think I need to work on my chipping pattern and add some depth to the weathering. Practice, practice, practice! Cheers, Brett T

Nice work on the barrels Brett, practice is a good thing buddy. - It sure is. As tempted as I am to get stuck straight in, I figure that the learning curve is going to be pretty steep, and I would rather not be learning lessons on a live build. Besides, these Tamiya drums are pretty ordinary so they'll make great test subjects for all sorts of practice.

The day yer can honestly say yer keepin' up with all the great stuff on this site probably means yer lyin' or you have FAR too much time on yer hands that should be spent at the bench.....life's a viscious circle Brett! - Too true Dicky. Thats why I have been quiet lately. I still have updates to post for the drones build. But do I muck about on the computer or finish masking up?

looks super like the paint work so far Thanks mate, it's my first go at this style of weathering, we'll see how my practice paid off. On the weekend I made a start on the hull: lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ZmJxWQx5K-w/UzrNHn299qI/AAAAAAAAAIM/e5x9Wdruo3o/w496-h372-no/20140401_070343.jpgThis was the hair spray method over a hull red/ pigment base coat coated with FFA. I am not sure if I am convinced yet, as I think it may be a little heavy handed. The top coat is a mix of Tamiya XF-26/XF-11 and XF-13 which looks a bit light but should tone down with filters etc. Feel free to post any tips and feedback would be appreciated - I gotta learn somehow. Regards, Brett T

I like the result. You're aiming to depict a derelict one, am I correct? If so I'd deflate the tyres, or at least some of them...

Well I just realised I haven't posted a thing since before we moved forums. Not that there is much to post because of my glacially slow progress. But here are the latest updates: I'm not exactly please at how the dust has washed out all of the worn green, but I noticed that I get some of the mapping back that is now covered by the monochrome pigments. I am thinking that selective matt clear may bring some interest back. Ideas anyone? Cheers, Brett

Brett, she looks good. To bring back some of the green you can always add mapping or filters.

Base looks great! Always am fan of dusty look... have to ask you about the figures who makes those? I have been looking for a good figure of Afghan boy or something like that for my future T-62 build.

Rob: Thanks for the tip and encouragement. Your BTR is what inspired be on this build.
Tojo72: Thanks mate. It's taken a lot of work to get to this stage. Much which was pointless. But that was the whole point - experimenting.
Andy: The the figures are from Verlinden. Set VP 2175. The casting is very good, and I can't wait to have a crack at painting them up.
