OK it has taken me a while to get to this update for two reasons: One had been a hectic schedule the last couple weeks. Two is that, every time I put a layer of primer on this thing, there was a seam along the front of the hull that popped right out. I'd fill it, sand the heck out of it, and then hit it with primer and BAM there it would be again. Took about 4 cycles to finally get it gone! So here is the -706, all primed and ready for me to attempt the digi scheme on it. In a little bit, I hope to get half an hour or so to go down and put a first color (tan) on it. I do have to admit, though, that matching the colors on this thing is tough. I hope I can find good enough approximations.

OK guys, here I go.... my attempt at this digi scheme: First, the vehicle was base coated in Tamiya deck tan. I only did some light layers, with heavier attention to the places I envisioned masking (I did end up going back and adding more paint in a few spots): Next, I turned to the digi pattern that Thom gave me, some blue tape, a tile and a sharp knife: Cut out the patterns that I like and apply to the vehicle: I found I had to restrain myself and keep in mind that there are four colors so I didn't want to get too crazy with masks for the first color. Once I was satisfied, I busted out the airbrush to apply the next color, in this case brown. I used Tamiya flat brown lightened with deck tan. I noticed in my reference photos that this color seems to be the sparsest and, in most cases, does not touch the tan. So, I as before I only hit the spots I felt would have a mask: A couple lessons learned: First, I have found it is necessary, as I said, to use restraint. There are a lot of colors on these things. Second, you see in that last pic one of the masks is white. I figured out (after hours of cutting) that it was actually easier to cut the mast out of the paper, then use Elmer's glue to glue it to the tape, and then cut out the tape mask. A little more time consuming, but my failure rate declined dramatically after I started doing it this way.

Great idea! I'd never thought of such a shortcut to making masks...

Wow. That look like a SERIOUS pain in the a$$! Very interested to see what this looks like 5 paint layers down the road. You know, it was a bit of a PITA when I first started. But now that I've done a few, I kind of feel like I've worked out most of the kinks in the chain. Pre-cutting the paper is a big help, because then all I have to do on the tape is a series of straight line cuts and then notch out any cutouts. It is actually relatively easy. Time consuming yes, but easy... ish.... And, in reality, it'll only be one more layer of paint. The next color is a flat green, which I intend to do just like the brown - pick and choose my spots. I want to avoid too much paint accumulation near the masks and figure this will help. Once the green is down and masked, I just overcoat the entire vehicle with a different shade of green (closest match I have is IJA Green from Tamiya). That will really be where the rubber hits the road. I'll have to build up the layers really slowly and also be very conscious to spray as close to perpendicular as I can. Should be fun!

OH MAN!!! Ill be watchin fella, im wanting to put that digi-camo on my ZTZ 99A MBT....alot of work. Lookin excellent so far Boyed. It isn't as much work as it looks - perhaps a little tedious, yes. But not overwhelmingly difficult. I go down to the bench and spend about 15 minutes to cut out 3, 4, maybe 5 masks, then go upstairs and goof off with the kids, then back down for a couple more. Not too bad, just time consuming.
