Finally decided on my next armor build - Trumpy's new T-80BV. I'm planning to do it up as the green/gray/black number on the right: The kit lists a parts count of 1050+...which...cripes. A lot of that is the tracks, no doubt, but I won't be using the kit tracks. Instead I picked up Trumpeter's workable track set. We'll see how it does. Here's everything airdrying after a soak in soapy water. Detail is top notch. Easily on par with Dragon/Tasca/whoever. The workable tracks look...intimidating. More to come soon.

You are not kidding about the details... I think I am sold! I am afraid this will be my first Russian modern tank build...
Can't wait to see you build it!

Years ago I've started the old Zvedza kit, also going for the scheme on the right, but never finished.
Now I have the Trample-deer, and it's lightyears ahead! I will use Frootloops for the tracks and some SKP lenses.
Cheers, Tobi

Most of last night was devoted to cleanup efforts on the MiG-21 (putty! sanding! hate that part of the process so much!), but I did get to do a little bit on the BV. - Clipped about 60% of the track links from their sprues - Glued about eight parts onto the lower hull - Did a four-link test-run of the workable tracks. The workable tracks...work. I'm a bit concerned that the little end connectors don't all fit as snugly as I'd like. Having to glue those down would make them not workable, but having them falling off would be annoying all on its own.

Good looking kit, you are proceeding smartly. As far as the tracks, put a little drop of Future, diluted white glue or Tamiya Clear Gloss on them. It will prevent premature loss. G

Am watching this one with interest Doogs, especially those tracks. I've always wondered how on earth those type of dual connector tracks can possibly stay together with the end caps AND remain fully workable.

I used Maskol on one set. Dries rubbery and not as thick as rubber cement.

Starting to claw my way toward some progress. First...managed to get all 736 (!!!!!!) pieces of the workable tracks off the sprues. These are going to be tedious and a half to get together. 87 to a side. My plan is to do 16 a day, so it should take me 10-11 days to get the track runs completed. I have to say, I really with this sucker came with rubber bands. I HATE glue-em style indy links. Don't mind workables or friuls as much, but they just seem like such a waste on modern tanks with side skirts obscuring at least half the run. Oh well, boo hoo right? Also making progress on the first few steps of the instructions. Lots of fiddly bits still to attach, but the big stuff is going down nicely. This is going to be my first build where I tackle the running gear and lower hull before I build the upper and fenders and such. It's going to be interesting...but it means I'll probably be throwing paint before too long. Really looking forward to trying out Mig's Modern Russian Vehicles paints.

Lots of parts to those tracks but looks like you've got the right approach by breaking it up into segments per day, that will at least break up the tedium of such a repetitive task. Looking good so far.

736 parts?!?! A minute each or so for trimming & gluing... it will take a while. LOL But worth it when they re done.

I'm strongly considering not doing full tracks. The entire upper half is buried under fenders and skirts...no reason it couldn't go commando...

Sounds like a good plan and you can use spare tracks for future builds.

Any full skirt build I've ever done with indy links have no top runs, just what can be seen. If the kit has bandies, I don't paint what's under the skirts. Why waste time, effort, and torture yourself? We'll never tell...Looks to be shaping up fine

Awesome news! Managed to get past the first few steps of the T-80 build and start toying with the upper hull a bit last night. But first...I brought the track count to 48... The undersides have some awesome detail. Shame it'll be invisible. I'm planning to wait a bit to install the belly skirts. These loops are pretty slick. They hold what I can only guess is a log. Not sure what it's for...guessing it's a self-recovery tool if the tank gets bogged? Weird thing is that this "log" is located on one of Trumpeter's soft plastic/vinyl-ish sprues. Got a start on the upper hull and particularly drilling out the mounting holes for the ERA blocks. Then this happened. Doh!

Oh well...I'll just grab something close and keep going. I'm only drilling holes to plug the ERA blocks into so they won't be visible. BUT I did give up for the night because I glanced at the time when it snapped and it was WAY too late!

Hate it when a good drill bit goes bad at just the wrong time. 48 links is a good count, getting closer every day! The unditching log was a common thing on Soviet vehicles, made for a cheap but effective means of dealing with potential mud/miring issues I guess.

Bandies aside I've NEVER installed a full set of indies on a modern build....life is definitely too short IMHO! Drilling out the ERA mounting holes.....Hmmmmmm I find it quicker cutting off the mounting lugs!!! By drilling out I get to 1) assure they're where they should be and 2) glue them from the inside. Less visible mess!

Been waiting to see one of these get built, it does look a nice kit, not sure about those tracks though Well, these are Trumpy's separate workable tracks. The kit comes with traditional indy links (that still have to have the guide horns glued on). Personally, I HATE the glue-em kind of indy links, so to me these are definitely preferred. And they were only $20, versus something like $55 for friuls.
