More progress last night. This kit is LOADED with parts, but so far it hasn't felt overwhelming in the slightest. That might well change when I get to the turret. Last night I pushed the track links a bit further down the road. 64 are now done. Figuring I should be good with ~ 120 links all told. Also pushed through Step 7 of the instructions...forward upper hull is in place, ERA blocks are down. Next comes the rear upper hull with the engine deck, etc. Hopefully I can coincide a wrap of the hull construction with a wrap on the tracks, and get to painting and weathering the running gear, tracks and hull underside at more or less the same time.

The detail looks yummy Matt. I got an old Dragon T80 from jackwagon at a bargain price of a tenner as he wanted this kit which I think he has now I've had a look in the box and the detail is good on this one too

So I've started to realize that, if I'm only doing semi-runs of track, I need to be able to place the running gear so I can gauge how many links I need per side. And to do that I need to glue the wheels together. And to do that I need to paint them (so I'm not trying to get an airbrush into the narrow spaces once the wheels are sandwiched). And that means...last night was largely spent on the exciting and always invigorating task of cleaning up wheels. Sanded off the worst of the sprue attachment points, then used my preferred method of scraping with a #10 xacto blade to erase the seam. Then I primed everything with Mr. Surfacer 1500. If it's not raining tonight (it's probably going to rain tonight), I'll move on to painting the hubs using Mig's Modern Russian AFV paint set.

Road wheels, the bane of every armor builder's existence, but once done it feels so good to move on to the rest of the stuff!

Spent a lot of last night's bench time getting the wheel sit sorted. You'd think manufacturers would have a way to ensure proper alignment. But alas. After that, I got through the end of Step 8. Chugging along.

I'm getting really close to the point where I can start shooting paint onto the lower hull. First, though, I need to build up the fenders (to shoot the insides black, at the very least). They are massive. Another nifty thing - the unditching log can still just be slid into place. This is one of about 12 parts in the kit that are this weird plastic/vinyl material not unlike Dragon's DS. Makes a ton of sense for the various mud flaps and the mantlet dust cover. Not quite sure why it's needed for the unditching log...

MAD - in a good way! Doogs - what paint numbers do they suggest for the blue grey in the left-hand scheme?

Great stuff Doogs, maybe the log was an after thought and they couldn't put it on a regular sprue?

More progress. Feels a bit like digging a tunnel with a spoon at this point. Lots of little bits, like these PE latches for the fender boxes. Also got the lower hull and inside of the fenders all primed up last night. And of course...60% chance of rain the next two nights. Guess I'll move along to the turret soon?

Good news - it hasn't rained since this morning. If the weather holds I should be able to paint tonight.

Paul - Trumpeter lists the Blue /Grey shade as: Mr Hobby 20 Vallejo 965 Tamiya XF8 HTH? Fabarooney jackwagon. I do believe I have that Vallejo in my own stock so I can think about getting on with my '72 sometime this year. P

More work on the bottom... First up, washing the wheels. The gray wheels received a wash of Vallejo Gray, and the green got Vallejo's Olive Green wash. You can see the difference this makes in the wheels below. I also got the wheels glued onto the suspension arms. UGH. Had to do some extra drilling out of the hubs and use a lot of gel CA to make them sit flat. Finally, I made a command decision. The workable tracks are nice, BUT the end connectors don't always fit snug and are always falling off. So for the main lower run, I'm using the kit's indy links and just gluing them. Cool thing is that they fit with the workables if you just snip off two connector pins, so it'll be easy to transition from one to the other fore and aft where the workables will really make a difference.
