Those tracks remind me of the DML/DRAGON PATTON M46 kit. WAY too many pieces to just build tracks that are going to be hidden anyway. But it is a nice looking kit and I like the camo pattern on the left! Jeff

More progress. Feels a bit like digging a tunnel with a spoon at this point. Lots of little bits, like these PE latches for the fender boxes. Also got the lower hull and inside of the fenders all primed up last night. And of course...60% chance of rain the next two nights. Guess I'll move along to the turret soon? Oh my... you're my hero! I bet those loops came in handy for the PE on the fender boxes. Jeff

Started work on the turret last night. Good. Lord. Six parts per ERA block. Squirrely fit and test-fitting is nearly impossible after a certain point. But...trust the kit. Things mostly fit well. Only like 15 more to do! The smoke cans are Voyager brass. I also primed the tracks...tonight they will get paint.

Painted the tracks tonight with Mig AMMO Dark Tracks Then started weathering with Vallejo Dark Brown wash. I actually tried this side by side with AK's Track Wash and preferred the Vallejo.

Grand Doogs. A quick question, why did you prefer the Vallejo?

Grand Doogs. A quick question, why did you prefer the Vallejo? Hmm. That's a great question. Wish I had a good answer! I honestly just preferred the way it handled. Both are very close, tonally, but the Vallejo has a transparency to it that makes it at once more subtle and more pronounced. It also dries a LOT faster so additional layers of weathering on top can happen without having to wait days.

Went back over the Dark Brown wash last night with Vallejo Dark Gray Wash...now I really need to start thinking about what kind of weathering, if any, I want to do to the lower hull and running gear.

Sharp, sharp, sharp. I'd go light with the weathering. Too bad to hide all that nice stuff.

So I think I'm deciding to take a light weathering touch with this one. Most T-80BVs I've found on the interwebs are generally clean...and I'm going to let this one be that way as well. So instead of the usual pigmented or muddied up tracks, I'm going with some AK Earth Effects brushed on and then broken up with White Spirits. It's a very subtle, "it's been driving" look. I'll also be using graphite to represent exposed metal on the track cleats, guidehorns and such, but I'm not quite there yet.

The tracks are done-ish! Weathering - AK Earth Effects brushed on, then diluted with White Spirits. Did this on the lower hull and wheels as well, where it worryingly began lifting the AMMO paint. What's the point of acrylics if they lifted under enamel stuff, exactly? Additionally, used a pencil on the interior track pads and guide horns. Will use it on the exterior track cleats as well, but much later in the build. And with that, the tracks are glued in place (to the idlers and sprockets) and I'm now ready to move on with the rest of construction.

What's up with the lifting? That's interesting. Tracks look good none the less. Looks like the upper hull fits well also.

Glued the fenders in place last night and got more work done on the turret. The ERA blocks are a serious effort. Randomly, one side it's all individual blocks, and the other has the entire "quarter turret" run molded as single runs top and bottom. There's more that sandwiches around and on the sides of this, too. At some point I think I'm going to have to stop and shoot some black paint. Now way I'll be able to get paint into all the nooks and crannies otherwise. Here's a look at the vinyl-plastic mantlet cover. Yes, I know I need to drill out the coax gun. Some hero shots. The gun is not cleaned up at all, but good lord is it huge. Moving on to the other side of the turret tonight, if I don't break away for some MiG-21 time.

More creeping progress on the turret. I'm getting really close to the point where I'm going to have to pause and shoot some paint, otherwise I'll never be able to get into all the nooks and crannies of the turret.

I can see why you might be approaching a 'frontier' on needing to shoot paint...so much real estate and surface area tied up in those ERA blocks that getting to them at the right angle is going to be a challenge for sure.

And there are still more ERA blocks that sit outside the current runs and the smoke cans!

The turret got its coat of AMMO Green Khaki last night. Overall this stuff is interesting, but I'm not too sure it'll steal me away from my beloved Tamiya and Gunze. It sure cleans up easier, but I can't seem to get it to spray with as much nuance as the other two. That combined with the way it lifted on the wheels during weathering. But I'm committed at this point, so, onward! Next it'll be on to finishing off the turret and upper hull construction. I imagine I'll probably have another "stop to paint" episode when I get to some of the details like the lights and out-back fuel drums.
