So I've had a few people asking me to do videos for some time now, and as I hit a bit of an impasse with the blog, where the standard 4-part build log thing just isn't doing it for me anymore, I decided...what the heck. May as well give it a go. Thought I'd use this thread to catalog the experience. First Thing - NeedsAdding video to the bench is a lot more involved than just adding a camera. You need... - A video-capable camera. I've got a rarely-used Sony HDR-CX520 camcorder that does the trick. I'd love to use something like a GoPro, but those things have such a wide field of view that they're not really useful for tabletop video. - A stable shooting platform, since the idea is to video techniques in action. I picked up a small, cheap tripod that *may* do the job. We will see. - A way to edit the video into something useful. I'm already signed up with Adobe Creative Cloud, so the answer is easy - Premiere Pro CC. - Time to properly edit videos, add title cards, transitions, etc. I have no idea where this will come from! - An external scratch disk. I picked up a sweet little Western Digital USB 3.0 1TB portable drive. It's about the size of a pack of cards, and has twice as much capacity as my Mac's internal disk. It's USB 3.0 and an SSD drive, so it's also wicked fast. Second Thing - SetupLast night, I set the camera up. My computer monitor has a separate HDMI input, so I took the liberty of hooking it to the camera. Boom - instant video monitor, so I can frame shots better. Side benefit! The video monitor makes a GREAT magnifier, to really highlight all the flaws in my work. At the tightest zoom where I can still focus, I'm guessing I'm pulling at least 5X magnification. The offset view also really helps with seeing paint go down from a different angle.

Third Thing - A Sweet Logo BumperIf I'm going to do video, I want to do it right. I've got an ulterior motive, too. Gaining more experience with After Effects and Premiere Pro will be beneficial professionally, as a long-term project I'm working on involves developing content for pro video producers/editors/animators etc. So, WTF is a bumper? The little clip that plays before a video (and after...). When a logo is involved its also sometimes called a logo sting, but I learned them as bumpers, so bumpers they stay. Anyway...out comes After Effects I'm comfortable in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and I can grope around in Premiere Pro, but After Effects is utterly alien. Prior to yesterday, the only experience I've had with it is looking over an editor's shoulder as they make really cool stuff happen. Considering the complexity of what's involved, it's fairly intuitive. If you know Photoshop and have a passing familiarity with non-linear editing, you can fumble around a bit purposefully. Which is what I did. Here's my first attempt at a bumper. I need to mess with the image drop timing, and I want to tighten up a few other areas, add audio (R-2800 startup!), but already this is the slickest thing I've ever created in terms of video. Next up...actually shooting footage! I think I will start with painting the Skyhawk and weathering the LAV-AT.

I think my search for intro music has hit paydirt! The first :13 seconds or so...to roll the bumper and then the main title cards ("How To: Mix Paint" or whatever).

You've got your own little "Porn Studio" set up now for building models ( not that I know anything of what that looks like ) here as this could be the start of a new way to view a build blog! Nice work Doogs! Jeff
