It begins. After dithering for days about which kit to build, I settled on the Hobby Boss BA-10. Here it is, with a bit of bling. The wheels are from Masterclub but I may rob some from a MiniArt GAZ-AAA. The Overall tracks are from Hauler and the barrel is from ARMO. The kit etch is marked BA-3, which has already been announced. The suspension, interestingly, is marked GAZ-AAA so we may soon see a truck from Hobby Boss. So far, so good. Some of the moulding gates are bigger than they might be, but that's a minor inconvenience. It looks to be a very nice kit. More to follow. Regards Scott Fraser

I'll sit in the front row - is very interesting, as they have done with this model. Good luck !!!

Appears to be a much nicer kit than the Zvezda BA-10 I did several years ago. Will be following the progress on this one.

The instructions and sprue shots are online here. Step One is to assemble the frame, simple enough. Step Two is the assembly of the rear axles. There are about fifty parts for both axles, some of them very tiny. The instructions are rather vague on the attachment points for some of the parts. Photos of a GAZ-AAA rear end will be useful. Sprue cutters are invaluable. They allow one to get flat against these wee parts and minimize cleanup, reducing the chance one will fly across the room. It may be easier to trim the remnants of the sprue gates on the smallest of these after they are glued to the axle assembly. Here are photos of Step One and Two: There are very tiny parts on these: I haven't attached the leaf springs to the axles yet. The next step is to attach the axles to the frame, followed by the engine assembly and only then attaching the upper leaf springs. I will build the engine before attaching the rear axle assembly to the frame. So far, the parts are very clean and finely detailed. There is some confusion over whether it is a BA-10 or BA-10M that has to be sorted out. The kit has elements of both. One significant failing is that there is no provision for the Overall tracks, which were standard equipment for these armoured cars. They were draped over the fenders on the BA-10 and on the BA-10M, they were strapped across the rear of the vehicle, resting on a shelf. These Overall tracks were common on GAZ-AAA trucks and armoured cars on that chassis. The Hauler tracks are very nice. The tracks on my model will be strapped on the back. I'm planning on building this as a BA-10M, although I haven't settled on any particular scheme. The next challenge is the engine. More tiny parts... Regards Scott Fraser

Good start Scott. The axles look virtually identical to the Miniart ones on my GAZ truck - only difference is the colour of the styrene. Personally I swear by using a nano saw with etched blades for part removal - so much so that I haven't even got a 'proper' sprue cutter.

Hey there Terry Cute model, cute subject !! and a good start. By the way, the sprue cutters looks awesome ... I think that this model has a lot of hatches, and the engine is detailed, am I right? --> so are you going to display it either open or buttoned up ?? Later Terry, Jelly

Looks like this one is going to carry the notion of "fiddly bits" to the extreme.

Looks good Scott! I like the BA-10. I have the BA-3 from eastern express. Its a bit of soft moulding. I think i sell it and also go for the Hobbyboss BA series...

A minor update... Here is the engine, minus a couple of hoses. I must say, I'm not all that impressed with the instructions. Some of the attachment points are not illustrated clearly and the orientation of some of the parts is a matter of guesswork. Happily, it will all be painted black and tucked away under the bodywork, never to be seen again. Next step is to attach the suspension, hopefully with all six wheels touching the ground. Great work! Nice! Do you have a camo scheme in mind? No, I have no idea how this will end up. I do have a scheme I would like to use, but there are no suitable decals available. I might have to look into 1/48 or 1/72 scale decals to find something in the right size. Regards Scott Fraser

Hmm, a difficult task awaits... I had the same with my MiG-3. The "12" on it does not exist in 1/48 scale. Its availlible only in 1/32 scale. I cut up some decals and made them fit on the model.

Remco

Judging by how similar the axles are to the Miniart set-up, maybe the rest of the suspension gubbins is similar too, so hopefully this'll help you get all the wheels touching down

Cool job, Scott
It seems you've entered the latitudes of "I have not at sight what I need to keep on"... maybe some homemade-print decals? Someday I must read a bit about it, as it seems the solution to a lot of markings...
