Hi, I wanted to show how I made tarps as shown here: The basic material is thin flat tissue paper, not the nose blowin stuff but the stuff used for gift wrapping. I've also seen lens and spectacle cleaning tissue which I think is suitable. To make it easy to handle I glued some of the tissue to a sprue frame using superglue. Then I got some Vallejo Model Color paint and brushed it onto the tissue undiluted. This paint is thick in consistancy so apply it thickly. When dry to touch, after say 15 or 20 minutes, the tissue can be cut out. Vallejo paint has a rubbery character, and at this point the tarp can be folded and added to your model. Because it is sort of rubbery, the folds and creases you put in it are soft like cloth. I think if you leave it a day or more to fully dry, it becomes more stiff and the folds will be more sharp like paper. So it's better not to leave it too long. Then comes the tricky secret part . I use the airbrush to do the highlights of the folds, kind of like dry brushing with your airbrush. Using a lighter colour which is somewhat thinned, I lightly spray the paint across the surface of the tarp. Hold the airbrush down low pointing across the tarp, moving around from all directions. Just a light spray, here good control of your airbrush comes in handy. You can use sveral shades if you want, building up to the lightest last, I only used one shade here. I also hit it with some matt varnish, any shine on cloth doesn't look right. I hope this comes in handy! Cheers JT

Hi, thanks fellas! Yep Dicky it is pretty easy, this just took half hour including the painting.
I should have said that I got the ideas for this firstly from Ken Abram's tissue bedrolls, which are tissue + PVA glue. Thanks Ken! There used to be a utube vid of this which I can't find anymore.
And also Paulh's and Legend's tarps made from just paint and glue, which i saw on this forum. I kind of put the two ideas together, thanks guys!
Cheers JT

So the trick is no glue, just paint? That may be why mine don't come out like yours!
Great stuff.

I really like this technique for making tarps, and I especially want to try the drybrushing via airbrush. That probably never would of occurred to me, but now that I think about I can't wait to try it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys for the feedback, I hope this was useful. My last tarp was made of teabag paper instead of the tissue, which was better at staying intact when wet from the paint. Plus the tea leaves are really small like shrivelled leaves in 1/35, may use them in future.
Cheers JT

Johnt
Neat idea I have never stretched by gluing them to a frame before applying paint or glue coats, I use the sheets that my wife uses in the dryer to keep wrinkles out of clothes and it works great and I used a stretchy paper towel material I got from Wallyworld and the texture of that looks very good also.
