Leon, that blows........ I bet you already know this, and PLEASE believe me when I say "I'm not trying to kick you when you're down"..... BUT, triple check for water damage......out here on the west coast, MOLD after the fact or after water exposure, that's the real $$$$$$$$$$. The mold cleanup, well they really stick a gun in your ribs.....
BEST of luck, I hope you get it all cleaned up without any further damage......

If you can mate, put a dehumidifier in there to soak up any extra moisture that might be sticking around! Hope the damage isn't too costly.. Cheers, Shay

So sorry it happened!!! Yes guys are correct get a dehumidify fast or you can borrow somebody until the basement is dry.
Have a kit I got at white elephant gift exchange and I don't want it. I thought maybe you would be interested... it's old kit but Dragon imperial kit. Will send you pics when I have the chance.

Hey, so long as your stash isn't sitting on the basement floor, it could be worse, right?

Bummer Leon, really sorry to hear that. If you do end up with mold, you don't need to spend megabucks - wash the walls down with vinegar, kills the mold and the spores. Used to have a mold problem in a rented house and the landlord refused to do anything about it - so we know it works, as that's how we got rid of it. alternatively: put some pondliner down in your basement and create and indoor pool

I FEEL your pain my friend. I lost my water heater about 2 weeks before I deployed to Afghanistan a couple years ago but thank god for my Army friends.... at 930 at night I got a buddy of mine and two plumbers to show up. two hours, a Large pizza, and a 12 pack of beer later and I was out 300 bucks..... the cost of the water heater!!!! The stash is up on 2x4 blocks with shelving units because my sump pump runs every 5 minutes for the ENTIRE winter season. I am paranoid of a water problem in my basement... legit!

Tobi, that's a darn good question! Rather it happen on a weekend so i don't have to take any time off work. Sean, got a dehumidifier going! The basement is unfinished just concrete walls and floor. No real damage, just some wet boxes with junk we plan on getting rid of. Andy, thank you my friend! I really was'nt expecting that. Dierk, thank you mate! Got plenty of vinigar and bleach. As for the indoor pool, rather have a hot tub. Brian, thank you! Once the basement is cleaned out anything we put down there will be off the floor.

Was part of a divorce settlement. Take possession, and have the carpet installers out the next day to remove the old and order in what I wanted. I'm at one end of the place stripping wall paper, and my son is upstairs painting. I hear a loud boom, and asked Mike what he dropped? No answer so I headed upstairs. Then I see water running out from a closet. The hot water heater blew up! Luckily it simply blew the bottom out. Had it been on the other end, it could have been lethal. seven years later just like clock work I changed another. Now the one I'm using is overdue, and when I change it out it will be tankless. gary

Sorry Leon, mine busted during last year's east coast blizzard.I usually change them out on my own,but with all the snow and OT at work,I had to get a plumber for $1900 when I could have done it for half under better circumstances.

most people forget about doing it, but they sell pans made for the hot water heater to set in. They usually have a place to install a drain. I did mine with the drain going right into the sump pump. glt

Another thing to remember is a similar pan under the attic central air in case the condensate line, gets plugged.

Gary you were lucky! Anthony ours cost about same! I could have attempted to do it myself but i'm not that great at soldering and i do'nt like fulling with natural gas. Gary i wish we had a drain and sump pump now! This house was built in the early 40's Andrew thank you buddy! I think i want to eliminate the word costly from my vocabulary.

Can be turned into hot tub by oil fire. I understand Trump is building new pipelines?

I glad it wasn't worse. Water heaters are one of those things that sit around for years watching and waiting for the worst possible time to act up.
You might also put a couple of fans down there to get some air movement which will cause evaporation.

We just got done digging a $1700 hole in the driveway to replace a section of sewer line that collapsed due to the way the pipes were mangled when the city sewer (we live in the country and places around here had septic until they were forced to hook up to the sewage) was installed 10+ years ago. Apparently they felt terracotta pipes could be bent on 27 degree angle and then reburied that way and it would never shatter.
Now it's done the right way, and hopefully ends the seemingly never ending problems we've had since moving in here 8 years ago.

James,we had the terracotta pipe from the house to the street replaced this past summer because it was collapsing and tree roots! The cost was astronomical.
