KV-5 Takom

This is my current build of the Takom KV-5 released a few years ago. The details are not as finessed as a Trumpeter KV-1 and there have been some fit issues mostly due to flash in thru holes. I picked the kit up for $20 at a swap meet so that kinda takes the sting out of needing to buy TWO sets of fruil tracks! It's been detailed with the Voyager PE set. I may spring for the dedicated fender set but not sure if I'm keen on all that soldering.

The kit welds were not at the plate joints so I'm replacing all those with stretched sprue welds or Archer welds as needed. I used sewing pins clipped to length for the track pains. 107 links each side.

The kit tracks must be pretty craptastic if you're willing to lay out for a PAIR of Friuls, no?

Got to admire just how much mileage the Soviets got out of the KV chassis, even for designs that didn't fully make it into production. This one is a monster...but looks good!

Dupes - The kit tracks needed a bit of cleanup and didn't fit together that well, I would have had to glue them like magic track and I have not had good luck with natural drape and the links staying glued in the past.

Bill - Yeah, it seems to have been a catch-all for just about every large weapon available. I don't have any larger Panzers like a Tiger to compare this to so its hard to get a feel how large this is.

Fine looking beast! As you said, 20 beans for the kit knocks off some of the pain of two sets of tracks...even if they are more than worth it when we can! Best of luck on the coloring!

I think it's a DAMN cool build..... Too bad it was a "paper panzer" as it were.....(meaning of course that none were built)

TRM - Glad I decided to opt for the metal tracks. I just found a build review by Andy King from 2015 describing the total frustration he had with all the track issues.

Thanks PJ - Once finished it will look good next to all my light German armor from the 1941 time frame.

The standard KV hull was about the same size as a Tiger so this 'stretched' model would've been longer but not wider. HTH.
