I need to up my game and acquire better tools for scribing lines. There are a lot of options out there and I would appreciate the board's insight on what they use and what they like/don't like about it. I've been looking at the following brands Dspiae Tamiya Border The Dspiae and Tamiya utilize a replaceable blade system with both hooked pull blades and straight push blades available. Dspiae pull broaches and push broaches. The wide selection appeals to me and I've been happy with everything I've gotten from Dspiae so far. Dspiae's cost is around $12 per blade Tamiya's offering. Their individual blades are very expensive at $25-$30 each and their selection is smaller than Dspiae. I've been happy with every Tamiya tool I own. Then there is Border's version which is non replaceable, but I have seen people talk very highly about their quality. These cost about $24 each at Sprue Brothers What other brands should I take a look at?

I never even knew that this array of scribing tools even existed Brian. I've got one scribing tool in my whole selection of tools so this is nice to know about all this.

Hey Brian, I suggest you check out what UMM-USA has to offer. They have all sorts of cool handy tools including really nice scribers. I have this set which I find to be right handy.

Thank you for the response. I'm a big fan of UMM, I have several of their tools and have looked at the scribers you posted in the past. My concern with them has to do with finger strain and having to grasp the thin tool for extended periods. Do you have any issue with that?

Can't say that i have encountered any issues with finger strain but, I have not used one for an extended period of time to give you a fair evaluation. I also own a few of the Dspaie tools and absolutely love them. The scribing set is one of the few tools I do not possess so I can't give you an opinion there. Although I'm quite sure it's the boss.

I have several Dispiae tools and every single one of them has been a good purchase. I absolutely love the Dspiae Spherical Vise my wife gave me for Christmas. It's my favorite tool on my bench.
My positive experience with them, makes me think their scribes would be a solid choice.

I have only experience with the Tamiya line from your list and I'm happy with them. The gaps in my selection were filled with Mr.Hobby blades. They have some intermediate sizes that are missing from Tamiya.
Though expensive, IMO Japanese tools are with the best one can aquire.

I was going to mention the UMM scribers as well, Joe beat me to the punch. Likely Joe was who recommended them to me some years back. They are my favorite scribing tools by far, but like Joe, I had never heard of Dspiae tools and was not aware of the Tamiya or Borders offerings.
Again, to me-too Joe, I also have not used my UMM(s) for a period long enough to induce strain so you may have a point there.
Love it when I chime in to a thread thinking I have something useful to add, and end up learning about new stuff myself instead!

The timing of this is exquisite as I am looking to get my first scriber for a large project. I was just going to grab whatever the local shop had on the shelf but now I am torn with so many options. Looks like the Umm (sounds like I am confused) is in the lead. Even my big project should not consist of long enough periods to create strain. Not like I have anybody hovering over me to make sure I keep working even if my hands hurt.
