Hi, I was invited to the forum by Joe (406 Silverado). Thanks Joe!
I’m kind of an oddball modeler that likes oddball models. I used to do only “normal” stuff like jets and armor, but went off the rails when those Japanese anime kits started showing up in the stores back in the 1980s. I still buy aircraft and armor - oddball seems to be in vogue these days with the kit makers, which pleases me to no end. I also like movie sci-fi kits and am “F1 curious”.
A lot of people drop the hobby and return to it in their later years, but I have been gluing stuff together the whole time. But I suppose my “rediscovery” of the hobby is basically a desire to finish more stuff. The stash won’t build itself, and having dealt with several deceased friends’ collections, there is a sense of urgency.
So please excuse me as I sometimes bother the other kids in the classroom and get into trouble because I never follow directions - all my elementary school report cards said so!

Hey there Neal. I am so glad Joe got an invite to you and even happier that you accepted. I just joined at Joe's behest and I am enjoying it here and glad to be a part of its resurrection. I have not been very active lately but, I'm getting back into the swing of things. Look forward to reconnecting with you and catching up on things. Also very excited to see what you have been working on. Good to see you my friend.

Hi Neal… welcome aboard and I look forward to knowing and learning from you.
I love your intro and am totally down with the Oddball vibe, as I’ve been described in similar ways as part of Oddball Nation. My wife got me a subscription to FineScale Modeler as a present last year and in a couple recent issues, they talked extensively about the emerging Gundam (sp?) kits, which may be part of what you speak of? …they described it as the new generation of modeling coming to fruition, and it’s having become a force within the hobby. They also talked of the interrelationship to traditional (armor, air, automotive, etc.) modeling. Fascinating stuff!
Similarly, I have a few wargamer friends that do something similar, in everything from Nuns with Guns, Killer Grannies, to wildly fantastical creatures, mutants, and Zombies. So what I am saying is, there’s no shortage in Oddballs out there! (Hell, I just bought a WWII Zombie miniatures game as a retirement present to myself, that cost a small fortune!).
Enjoy the forum and see you around the boards!
”Oddballium Infinitous!” (<— not real Latin, but it sounds cool!)

I see there are FSM alumni here - hi guys! And thanks everyone for the warm welcome!
I think it’s great that offbeat models are so common nowadays that they have become mainstream. When I was still a “normal” modeler in the early 1990s, there was a dearth of late WW II German aircraft. Then Trimaster and DML appeared and blessed us with marvelous kits of German jets and late model Focke Wulfs. Other kit makers like Tamiya jumped in as well - I was floored when they put out the Kyofu (the floatplane that the Shiden and Shiden-Kai were based on). I mean, who would have thought we’d get a plastic kit of such an unknown aircraft, from the Big T no less? I think it was World of Tanks that played a role in the flood of prototype and whiffer tank kits. I especially like bizarre armor that actually existed, like Objekt 279, the wacky Soviet “UFO tank”. What was once the exclusive domain of expensive, hard to build and hard to get resin kits is now available in injected plastic.
Once while headed to a jobsite, I spied something that looked like a cross between a loaf of of bread and a caterpillar sitting outside of the gate at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Base. When I got home I looked around in my model mags and found a resin kit of the thing. But shortly afterwards, AFV Club announced a kit. Who knew back in the day we’d get a plastic kit of the LVTP-5 “Spam in a can”? Heady days.
And then there’s the 18.5 m, 55 ton Mobile Suit in the room. Gunpla has only recently become widely known in the US, but it’s been on a slow burn since Cartoon Network aired Gundam Wing in 2000. I have noticed the US Gunpla builders have seriously upped their game as of late, using armor weathering techniques to great effect. I built my first Gunpla back in 1983 on a lark, accidentally slipped, and fell down the rabbit hole. And it’s a really big, deep rabbit hole, much more so than many in the West could imagine.
It really is a great time to be a modeler, where the selection of kits has never been better. Even the old standbys continue to get attention. It seems a new BF-109G6 gets announced every year! And LIDAR technology allows really unusual subjects to be made, like Fujimi’s crayfish kit. Yes that’s correct, they scanned a real crayfish to make a plastic kit! Oh yeah, it’s also great that Airfix finally put out a new Vulcan using the scanning tech.
Anyway, enough of my blathering. My old report cards also consistently mentioned I had a habit of distracting the other kids. I’ll post pics of stuff I’m working on shortly!

You're right about being a good time to be a modeler. Especially with the onset of the whole 3D printing game. LOTS of subjects and even when there aren't any models available for a particular subject, they can simply be printed up. Looking forward to seeing your builds and works in progress Neal. Thanks again for coming aboard potna.

Hab SoSlI’ Quch You're right about being a good time to be a modeler. Especially with the onset of the whole 3D printing game. LOTS of subjects and even when there aren't any models available for a particular subject, they can simply be printed up. Looking forward to seeing your builds and works in progress Neal. Thanks again for coming aboard potna. 3D printing kinda scares me, to be totally honest… it offers amazing opportunities to supplement OOB kits! …but it also has the potential to tank many model companies. Yeah, I know that later statement is a bold statement indeed, however, I see a hobby (like all hobbies) that has a steep price curve (models priced at one and two hundred dollars are very common) on what model manufacturers are offering, and of you can just 3D print them through a low cost file (or free shared), these manufacturers better start paying attention at the glut of 3D printer purchases and users. I’ve a couple modeler friends that don’t even buy kits anymore… they are making their own, and they’re incredible. (…hey, I’m a Pisces…I don’t like change!)
