Sorry if its an obvious question, but does gthe external surface of CA rust in the same way -if at all- as "normal" armoured steel ? TIA

Paul- the makeup of composite armor is usually classified. But from what I know ( The Military Channel sees to it that I am briefed on such things), the exterior surface is standard armor plate. Or as you said- "normal" armoured steel.
So it will rust....

Yep it rusts. It depends on the materials and placement of course. You can find many M1 abrams coming back for overhaul that are rusty, especially after they sand blast them in a huge vertical chamber. I believe the M1 has mainly composite, but I could be wroong.
