Honestly, brandonk 's Secret Santa GB’s were the only thing keeping me there. Man, those were the best! Brandon, I might ask to borrow your idea in 2024 for the MSC.

I went to FSM to read that thread referenced above - WOW with the pop up ads everywhere! Makes it nearly unreadable. This forum is a modeling forum. No 229 threads, no Manstein's Revenge, none of the extraneous BS.
Don't worry, most of us that got banned with Manny (who I can't stand by the way) were not really involved in the drama that caused all the issues. I don't have time for that kinda crap.

Ya, that one was one I took over for Falconmod. He got tired of it and bounced and offered it to me and I took over. It was fun for a long time, but the last two years it REALLY fell off in members enrolling and then disappearing. This year it got really bad and I through my hands up. Everyone wanted to do it until they got their gift and that was the last we saw of them. Oh well, everybody has a life outside of GB's. You have my blessing to run it here or there, I don't really care. I'm kinda burned out on the GB thingy since all that went down. I appreciate your kind words on the matter too.

FSM was my first forums as well. I barely got any regular replies to my posts, except from certain guys who are all passed away now. I remember having posted pics of my armor collection way back when (It was about 545+ models then) and got nothing but crickets. I did follow a couple people out to the LEM which opened my eyes to what a great Forums is supposed to be. This place is as close to the LEM as I've seen since it closed down.
I do frequent six other boards and find at least three of them equal to this one. I guess I just can't get enough from such talented and supportive members like you guys.

Funny thing for me, in that I never could get a groove for FSM’s forum, so I never saw any of the bad, and what I did see was just OK for my tastes. It was like the magazine, which I still subscribe to but don’t plan to renew in that the build articles never went into enough detail for me; I like to have a full description of the techniques, materials, and inside flavor of the builders’ experience, and it always seemed a little too quickie for me.
My gateway drug, as I saw used for other members, was Armchair General magazines’ forum, no defunct…it offered a huge cadre of very good modelers, but it also had it’s share of drama a divas. World War Two Zone was what took its place, until it too went defunct. Other forums just never felt like home…I was always the outside kid trying to get in.
When I found MSC 10 years ago, I was hooked! Unfortunately, work and life diverted my attentions away from building and I drifted away, until Joe invited me back and man, am I glad I checked back in!!! I never saw the dark period that supposedly happened here, and many forums suffer that fate… but I am so thrilled MSC is back to its superstar form and to be a part of it. You all make me feel at home and part of the family!

The quality of the atmosphere and camaraderie is what bonds us together and keeps us coming back.

Ya BKs secret santa was so much fun. I'll miss it this year. I managed to build all but one of the kits I received after 4 or so participations in the GB.

I haven't participated in the Secret Santa in quite a few years. I always built them except one. At least 15 years ago somebody gave me a Tamiya P-51. For some reason it sat in my stash. I recently unwrapped the plastic. Its a Hasegawa P-51K.

At first I joined forums to learn "How It's Done" as it were and to get feedback since back in 2010 I had no idea how people made models look like they do. At FSM I did not get a great deal of this and while no one (except Manny) was obnoxious about things, I got the idea that they could not be bothered so after a couple iterations of posting I just faded.
As suggested elsewhere, it's different here, a bunch of friendly, yakky folks happy to help out past and present. I've only seen one Manny type charachter here and within the first couple know it all posts made he was decended on by several members who were also apparently tired of such behavior, never to be heard from again. That, folks, is how it's done

Thanks for posting that.

That, folks, is how it's done The "yakky" aspect is one of the things I like most about this forum. I tend to like to talk (as if nobody has noticed) and that sometimes means I inadvertently lead a thread slightly off the tracks because I deviated slightly from the subject at hand. This is the "social" part of the hobby in my mind though. Some forums this is greatly frowned upon and the result is "This is my build" followed by 126 posts of "nice build" or "looks good". Although supportive this is also very boring to read and almost eliminates any form of actual interaction. The forum that Silver recruited me from is very much "stick to the topic you fool" and I actually received some nasty PMs from some members because I had the audacity of recommending something in a build thread without the OP asking. I have no clue what a "Manny type" is so don't even know who you were referencing here but I know there was at least one guy on FSM that annoyed me to death since he pretended be an expert/personal experience on everything but if you checked his statements were always cut and paste from Wikipedia. Nothing wrong with cut and paste but don't pretend that it was YOUR personal knowledge.

Nothing wrong with cut and paste but don't pretend that it was YOUR personal knowledge. There's absolutely nothing wrong about being social and I too have been on forums where that was a "no-no". That's really too bad because I feel like folks are missing out on the best part of being in a community by actually conversing with one another. Sure, there are disagreements from time to time as a result but we're all adults here and know all too well that we're "birds of a feather" so to speak and can put differences of opinions aside for the greater good. I've spoken with Manny on a different level than most that know him and he's actually a decent guy .....BUT....he did like to stir the pot too much and communities and people (this one and me included) don't like that. And I hear what you're saying about copying and pasting "the gospel". lol

I love the fact that I found someone like me on the forums...well tcoat and I interacted on FSM a few times. We BOTH pulled threads off the rails with his crazy ability to post JIFS LOL, and my wierd sense of humor. I knew I would like this guy. I never received a ban from FSM however I did keyboard punch a few people. Just simply didn't have time or energy for their BS. Many good things came from FSM, for me anyway, I'm a member of " The Mob", got to meet in person really really GREAT people, the most rewarding thing was a gentleman from Canada contacted me via e-mail and I assisted him in building a couple of his models he was having trouble with. I really liked that challenge, and he very much appreciated the results. MSC is a great place and I enjoy all the folks who participate. I would like to leave a positive feeling to each of them however there are a BUNCH of us, my brain is only so big LOL. I'm also excited to host the BSGB....yes a pointless plug LOL. This NEVER would have hapoened at FSM, to many voices. Now where did I leave that badge designer???

TC that was a direct reference to a guy who went by the name of "Von Manstien's Revenge". Perhaps he was before your time there. He could always be counted on to be mildly disagreeable about everything, a behavior that got tiresome quickly.

I was a member of FSM for quite awhile. When Shermanfreak asked me if I wanted to join a new forum, called The LEM, I moved. FSM was changing back then, and I never looked back. I also gave up my subscription.

There is a fellow on the Motorsports modeling forum that was disagreeable nearly every time I posted and then finally PM’ed me to say I had some nerve posting my work it was so bad. I’m the next sentence he said I had some potential because I enjoy obscure subjects but maybe I should watch some tutorials before posting any more work, because I was really detracting from the subject. I really have no idea what he was trying to accomplish to this day. Lol. Good times.

And it’s easy to talk with folks who are interested in a lot of the same things you are. Or it should be anyways. The social part of this forum is what makes me keep wanting to check in

TC that was some time ago in a thread by one Snidervolley who, at the time, was building a 1/1 SdkFz 222 in his garage. As can be imagined it's a long thread but if you look it up all will be explained

I don't know if this is the right thread, but reading what you have written, I feel obliged to confirm that around the world there are not many forums where one can find a 'friendly and comfortable atmosphere' like the one created in MSC. I must say that although I am a "foreigner" (in the sense that it seems to me that the vast majority of forum users are "born in the USA"), I feel more at home here (where in some cases I have to work hard to understand some American idioms or slang expressions) than in many other forums, including Italian ones, where the main activity is not to grow together by comparing and sharing knowledge, but to criticize or insult. The only real difficulty I have is to connect the names you mention (especially as I believe in some cases you have known each other for some time) with the nicknames used in MSC Anyway ... Well done and congratulations on your work. Bravissimi! BTW A little help with the translation ... Can I translate "yakky" with too chatty? Regards Rod

I emailed Jack this morning concerning your GB badge and gave him your email as well Perry. He should be reaching out with something for you soon bud. I'll let you know when he replies to my email or he may reply directly to you.

I managed to never have s direct interaction with him, never bothered me just ignored him most of the time. At one time there were so many good people who have moved on or dropped off forums besides the great people who moved over here. Hans Van Hammer The Doog Wingnut Hinksey Pvt Mutt So many more I can't recall. PS I even got banned once if you can believe it
I'm having trouble picturing this. YOU got banned??!! As far as the Doog goes......there's a whole story behind that fella.
