The Enterprise NCC-1701 in 1/650 scale
BY SPEEDGRAFLEX
Ah. Let's see if I remember how to post a thread introduction and bore you to death. No, I mean just the opposite. Let's be engaging and interesting and somehow find a way to introduce a kit that has been around for a long time. A long, long, long time.
Kit version info by Jay Chladek care of Cult TV Man : "When AMT first tooled up the long box kit, they didn’t expect the show to last very long or to the kit to be as popular as it was, so they apparently machined most of the kit tooling in aluminum. Aluminum is lighter weight and a less expensive material to cast parts in, but it also has a shorter service life. When the syndication of Star Trek resulted in the skyrocketing popularity of the show, the older tooling couldn’t handle the increased demand for the kit, so AMT retooled the kit molds in steel."
OK, Jay. So let's move on to the pictures. Reference will be first from the 11 footer:
I should point out this is the pilot version with the nipple tips on the warp engines (get yer mind outta the gutter Mister Scott).

YEAH, SILVERADO!Welcome aboard, bud. Welcome, welcome, welcome!
Now let's add the 33" version as seen on the Great Bird of the Galaxy's desk. This is the model that was found on eBay recently! Yup, a deceased movie director's storage unit was recently sold and this was found amongst the junk. The missing link which was long thought lost has been found on eBay. I was in shock. I don't think I was the only one. This came on the heels of finding the stolen ILM X-Wing in Greg Jein's garage. Uh-huh. 2023 was an incredible year. I suppose what has happened as the Old Guard passes into twilight their secrets are finally coming to light—things kept in darkness for years are now seeing daylight. It's an incredible time. I will add the current photos ASAP. I have to air drop from my phone or do something incredibly easy that will take me an hour to figure out, but I will post the eBay photos.

This is a very nice comparison photo between the publicity shot of the 33-inch E (top) and the model that was listed on eBay!
Lookin' pretty scratched and beaten by the years.

Welcome aboard (yeah I know it's from TMP but it's what I had on my hard drive). If you want to go OG I'll have to ask Lord Google to provide a still from TOS!!! Great to see and hear from you both. I want some popcorn NOW NOW NOW.

deafpanzer and tcoat!!! Thank you for beaming by! I’m a hardcore SW fan too, deafpanzer, but I saw an interview with actor Nic Cage where he was asked if wanted into the SW Universe and he said quite seriously, “I am more of a Trekkie.” I haven’t thought about calling myself a Trekkie in years but I definitely am one.
Gents, I’m also familiarizing myself with the Forum’s usage and getting to know everyone’s work. I can’t wait to check out what’s happening here.
Live Long and Prosper!

moramartht:
Haha!
I also find it ironic that the “Beam me up, Scotty!” Catch Phrase is one that does not literally appear during the original series. Quoting the great Lord Google vis a vis Screen Rant: Although Kirk had several similar variations of this request, he never actually phrased it as "beam me up, Scotty." At various points throughout the series, Kirk says, "Scotty, beam us up," "Beam me up," and "Mr. Scott, beam us up."
I was a very odd duck growing up. My parents were hippies and my mother wrote her masters thesis on the evil known as TV, so I used to sneak in viewings of the show after school at a friend’s house. This was a very imperfect introduction. I actually credit my local hobby shop for igniting my passion and imagination for Star Trek rather than the series which inspired everyone.
Note to all: I will at some point begin photographing the box and the frames of white and clear plastic. I do not have a firm mind set on how I would like to proceed. Should I build out of box or add more accurate resin accessories? I have been flattening and attempting to lighten the yellowed decal sheet for awhile!
