Bruce, I'm so sorry to hear about your Aunt, my condolences. I just lost my Uncle as well, back in February, so I know what you're going through. Take care of yourself and your girlfriend and if there's any set or prop construction you need help doing for her film, I'm local and could help if needed.

Since paint will be here next week, I assembled the nacelles then I spent hours sanding the seams as one tends to do with these kits. A lovely form of meditation, really. I stopped at 2,000 fine then polished the seams with cloth. I built this kit four times now so I know that the end seams will usually pop. Therefore, I used a hot plastic cement first to melt the edges a bit, then once that hot stuff cured I followed up with gel CA in a sectional approach. Next up; nacelle reference from the 33” Enterprise model. If that’s the color of the first model it’s very blue, maybe too blue. I’m going with more of the concrete grey overall with one blue accent. So blue. Aftermarket Decals by J.T. GraphicsAdding an image here of the only aftermarket I’m permitting myself. Since this is my own project I want to keep things as pure as possible and not overdo things and get caught in the details and basically never, ever get things done. As it is I’m taking the slow boat approach. That’s how things work best for me. A nice leisurely stroll through the project with every seam getting the attention it deserves. No shortcuts, no filler other then gap CA. It’s a clean build. I’ve ordered from Federation Models for years now. He’s the unofficial source for replacement parts on these old AMT kits. He also runs one of the great one stop stores on the web. The truly unfortunate news is that man running FM now has cancer and has shut down his site. So definitely say a prayer or rub Buddha’s belly or turn around sixteen times counterclockwise while closing your eyes because cancer sucks and there ain’t no easy way out. Prayers for all who are suffering. What else remains to be seen, as I’d love to start de-ribbing the top of the saucer next.

It's great to see you back at it Bruce! I hope life has settled down for you and everything is well. You are correct, cancer is a very very hard road indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this.

Good to see progress. Have to say, I've often thought about torching builds, but not in a meaningful way such as this to strengthen the seams.

Finessing the two molding sink holes ie “dimples” by partly drilling them out. I’m hoping the additional hole will create a base plug type thingie for the CA fills! Da brutal close up also reveals dee fill line of the CA. Okay, then. I’ll fix that shortly.

Some really fancy footwork going on in here with the "body work" Bruce. I completely agree on the theraputic end of things while trying to smooth everything out. Lookin' great buddy and glad to have you back in the swing of things.

I could go back and add 315 "likes" on this thread!
Great work on the old AMT kit!
I love the attention to detail, progress photos, and reference photos.
Thanks for the nostalgia and love for this kit that we have all built (more than once I suspect) before.
I'm following this build with much interest!

Dear mach 7 and Mustang Silverado and everyone following:
Every word you write serves as inspiration to me. Truly. I hope that by following and reading your projects I will do the same for you.
The paint arrived. I ended up with a lot of Mr Surfacer white so I am thinking about the primer underneath. I know many of you made the switch to black, easily the most opaque and rich color to use as a primer and I have used black too, particularly for high value chrome color coats. I guess I am going to try painting IJN Grey over a flat white base for this project. I have some Tamiya RAF and IJN greys in a box that I was thinking about using for details.
I don’t often see white used as a primer. Why is that? Anyone know?

I use white as a primer occasionally… either on figures or on a white subject… at least for certain areas anyways. If I want a vivid top color such as yellow or white, the white primer works best.

Ahhh. Thanks, Carlos. I can’t believe I forgot that for a bright color the brightest or strongest color needs a pure white background.

Young Won goes gray. He’s been model building for 38 years. One heck of a figure painter.

Howdy! Photo dump! Brutal. Brutal. You can see that despite my best glue and fitting skills the nacelles are out of round. Oh I know it’s close but gosh I really wanted to get these nacelles round. I wanted to chase the idea crazy as it may be that this kit could come together perfectly well. Let’s keep trying! After another major series of sanding, filling, polishing: A slight improvement; some kind of compromise must be reached. I’ll get it close enough then move on…

Now for her lovely neck which doesn’t quite fit without a gap - and this after shaving and adding CA fills. I am going to make a small plastic card shim next.

Feels less funky! I just really feel every scratch with the way the iPhone renders out each UHD close up, I swear she’s not a mass of scratches visible to the eye. I already know that I have to be careful using the iPhone to take pictures of people - every wrinkle and fold is on display.

They may be nearly invisible to the Mk.I eyeball, but stand out like a neon light on a digital photo… All your update photos look real good Bruce!

Well as I missed the conversation the other day, I will throw my two cents in on the primer. I use just about every color primer imaginable. Just depends on what I want to achieve with my final coat. White certainly for any light colors or things I really want to pop, grey probably less often than anything, silver and black quite frequently and pink under and reds or yellows. And occasionally even red oxide if I want to weather or do something different.
Now on to your updates. Great work and great photos as always. You’re really doing wonders with this kit Bruce. And you’re not kidding about the brutality of digital photos. Every time I photograph my stuff I am disturbed. Lol.
