Continuing with there ever growing range of products, K4 has released acrylic paints for the modeler. The bottles are of the now common eye dropper plastic bottle, and holds approx 20ml.
I won't go into every color that was sent to me for review as there are way too many. We'll start with the Thinner, clears and decal set.
The larger bottle in the image is the acrylic thinner and comes in a 70 ml plastic bottle. The thinner has a very low odor and actually smells pretty good when compared to enamel thinners available on the market. I used the thinner to clean some brushes after using the K4 paints as well as other acrylics such as Lifecolor, Tamiya and Vallejo. I was very happy with the results, and clean brushes.
Next we have the decal set solution. This was actually used on one of the models I am working on and I was quite surprised with it. I had a bottle of MicroSol on hand in case the K4 product didn't work well. In fact I had better results with the K4 decal set than I have in the past with other products. This one will stay close by for when decals are needed again.
Next up something I couldn't wait to try out, the clear finishes. These again are in 20ml eye dropper bottles and are available in Gloss, Satin and Matt finishes. Again the Gloss was used on a model in preparation for decals. The gloss went on smooth and dried very fast. I was able to apply two coats in less than five minutes. After the decals were on another gloss coat was applied and set to dry.
I then grabbed the Matt clear and applied two even light coats over the model. Here is where the true test comes in. I have had some experiences with flats and matt coats fogging and ruining a paint finish.Well the Matt dried fast, to a dead flat smooth finish.....and no fogging.
So for these four products I can give two thumbs up.
Here is the model that these were used on.
Moving onto the colors. I received 29 bottles of various colors ranging from several shades of metal and steel, to the basic colors of greens, gray, yellow , blue etc etc. These are all in the 20ml plastic eye dropper bottle similar to the clear finishes.
I used several shades of tan and green on the above pictured model and they went on just as other acrylics do, smooth and to a matt finish. Some colors may be thicker than others but by thinning with the K4 thinner there was no major problems.
I haven't tested all the colors or had the chance yet to brush paint all the colors. The ones I did use were used with an airbrush and or a small paint brush for chipping.
I have no price yet on what the colors, clears or thinner cost so a comparison to others in terms of costs can not be done. I can say that they are a welcome addition to my ever growing paint rack.
