Guy, this again is Masterclass level. Pitty you give so little explanation about the weathering and stuff you do each update. I sure could learn a lot from that - guess I'll be not the only one thinking this Keep that dang hot stuff comin' mate! Cheers

Mike, that's why I picked this kit mate, I don't like to paint 800 wheels !
Dave, thanks ! Did you build it too ?
Andy, thanks matey, I think I can finish the BT this weekend !
Luigi, they're Friul tracks, I picked them of course for their natural sag.
Wouter, sorry bro, first thing tomorrow is to write down how I did the weathering of the wheels !
T, are you tempted enough my good friend ? Thanks !

Thank you Dicky !
Wout moreless asked me to explain the method to apply pigments, washes etc. on the wheels.
So here it comes buddy...
I went for a quite simple and straightforward way. After painting of the wheels I started with a soft satin varnish, by airbrushing a couple of mists on them. Now the following washes flow better (smooth surface). I then applied a first AK wash : in this case Winter streaking grime, thinned down with mineral spirit and also a tiny amount of Raw umber oil paint was added to the product to darken it. I used it as a pinwash at the same time. After a good drying I went for the pigments. Very simple : I then picked Mig Gulf war sand + Mig Dark mud + AK European dust and mixed it with mineral spirit. It was brushed on as a compact, thick wash. After drying I brushed of the excess, and with a toothpick dipped in mineral spirit I refreshed the underlaying whites and greens. The result is a dusty wheel, with dust/sand collected around the bolts of the wheels. The next step (still to do) is to simulate wet spots of drying sand, this I did with heavily thinned down AK Fuel stains. Pigments soak this up in a very realistic way. Also grease and oil stains still has to be added to the wheels (today). I will describe each step I do from now on.
Best regards and a nice weekend to everyone ! AG

Stunning job, Guy.
How did you achieve such a natural finish on those broken glass lenses?

|
Post by armorguy on Jan 22, 2013 3:07:53 GMT -5
Hey Luigi ! I scribed very fine lines in the lenses with a sharp scalpel, I wanted to obtain a cracked look, with missing pieces. After adding a bit of dust pigments they appeared. O yes, before all that I sanded the lenses thin enough.

That B&W photo looks way TOO REAL! Can't wait to see it done... dig the unique shapes of its barrel.
I might have to smite you because I am now tempted to buy a first Russian armor kit.

Thanks ! Andy, "SMITE ME, YOU MIGHTY SMITER !" Almost there now I think, I still need to give the lights a touch of gloss, they're too matt. Best regards ! AG

Now there's proof in the B/W photos that you've achieved the right look. It could just as easily have rolled off the battlefield in 1941 just a few minutes ago Guy.
