Sooooo it turns out that after lugging all the builds down to the basement for the photo shoot, I realize that the wife took the camera up north (waaaaaaay up north - google "Van Buren, ME") with her this weekend. Looks like there's going to be a short delay before you can actually SEE any of the other builds!

Id like to build it and the Graf Spee, Bismark, Hipper, Gneisenau and Scheer. Probably wont get to build all but ill try at least one someday.

Hahahaha, neither Madawaska OR Fort Kent! She'll be back Sunday afternoon, so I plan on getting pics up by Sunday night.
Re: Scharnhorst - got that kit for a buck at one of my club meetings. Learned an AWFUL LOT of things while building it...basically what NOT to do when building ships (my first one - ever). Got a couple more in the stash, want to see if I can produce something a bit better.
Re: Hoarding - Andy, I was hoping you'd be able to free me of some of the kits that contribute to the stash when you came. Maybe next year?

I think this is all some kind of shadow trick...'pay no attention to that man behind the curtain' type thing...suuuuuure it's the 'wife's' fault!

Hey, look at that - I got my camera back! I need to figure out how to take pics of 1/48 scale aircraft while keeping the entire build in focus. Some of you guys must have some good tips on how to pull that off? Smaller stuff isn't an issue as much, because there isn't a wide range of focal points. Prop/tail/wingtips on 1/48 and up seems to be just big enough to need more know-how than I currently have.

I feel like I should provide notes or something with each pic (a la a contest entry sheet or something). Any interest?

Dupes, really like the diversity of your builds. All great quality too. That 1/72 StuH is awesome. Diggin' on the Grippen too. You mention focus is an issue on your 1/48 builds. Perhaps, I can help you with that. First, are you shooting with a DSLR or point and shoot camera? If a DSLR, set the camera on a tripod and set the camera to AV and change the f-stop/aperture to the largest number it will go, somewhere around 22. Focus about 1/4 of the way back from the front. Set the camera on self timer and push the button. The large f-stop increases the depth of field (focus depth). You shouldn't have any problem getting the whole thing in focus. This is how I shot my pics of my (damn ) 1/24 Mossie. If you are shooting with point and shoot, check the menu for exposure settings. If AV is available, do the same thing. If not, it's a bit trickier. Set your ASA/ISO to a high number like 1600 if it will go that high and try that. If you are using a white background, I suggest changing it to a gray one. It may be causing the models to under expose and be dark. Go to an office supply store or Walmart/ASDA and get a gray piece of poster board. The difference is amazing. If you need further help, send me a message and I will be glad to try to help further. Rick

I'll mess around with the f-stop settings and see what I can do. If I switch to a grey background, will my GIMP software auto-white-balance still work like it does now?

WHOA WHOA WHOA! Now I do believe you. Kidding, just wanted to pull your firm legs. LOL I like them all but if you want to know which is my favorite I am so torn between the P-40 and of course SW Starfighter other than of course Flakpanther.
Great work!!!! No worries... we are really coming to Maine in Sept or Oct 2014... no choice its a conference I can not miss. How far is it from Portland to your stash? Oops I meant to say your place!

Hahaha...only 2.5 hours to the stash from Portland! Hmmmm. If you time it right, we might be able to hit a "local" contest depending what weekend your conference is... 7 builds through 4 months - on pace for 21 (so long as I don't start cracking into any of the 1/32 aircraft...or all-resin armor kits). Right about where I want to be. BUILD THAT STASH!

Lets me? Shoot, she's the one telling me to buy more at the shows because she knows how much less it costs me than buying retail! She's also the one who was 100% behind the basement-to-modeling-studio remodel (I need to post some pics of that, too). She likes having me around...and when I want to build, I'm here. Keeper? OH YEAH!

Dupes, A DSLR will definitely make it easier. As far as GIMP - no clue, never used it so far as I know. You may have to try a shot and see. The gray usually works well because your light meter in the camera is balanced to see gray. The white background is causing the meter to try to go to gray and in the process, it is underexposing the darker model. If you stick with gray, you may need to set the camera to add about 1.5 overexposure. You might also be able to avoid the whole color auto correct if you change your lights to daylight balanced bulbs. Once I changed, I never had to do a color balance or change a setting. Shoot at f22 or greater and focus a quarter of the way in from the front and you shouldn't have any problems with total focus. (Unless you are doing a super close up!) Let me know how that works for you.

Re: bulbs - everything in my studio is identical 5000k temp so that I wouldn't get funky color stuff when shooting pics (and picking paints!). Let me see what doing the gray background does for the pics and then go from there.
About how far from your model do you put your camera? Wondering if I'm just too close to start.

I'm shooting with a 28-105 zoom probably around 70-80mm and try to either fill the frame or adjust to get a specific angle. I'm about 18 inches away. How close you are should not matter, unless it's blocking your light source. Even with your 5000k lights, I would still expect a bit of color funk. Seems like Olive is very difficult to balance well and the amount of reflection from the clear coat sometimes alters the depth of the color. It's still a work in progress, but I'm closer than in shoots past.

Thanks Iking! Let me try to get a better pic of the pit in the starfighter...maybe something from the top down, too, so you can see the outline better.

Nice to see the pics dupes!
Depending on your DSLR, you should also be able to custom set the WB by shooting a white object on your chosen background and lighting and use that as a reference for it to correct vs. relying on the GIMP software to do it for you post-shooting. Also make sure you're shooting RAW format and not JPG as that makes life a lot easier in terms of post-shoot editing and manipulation if you need to go that route also.
