Here's the latest on the smudgewerks bench miniart's superb AEC MkII.  Got this today and I am straining at the leash to start it. Looking at the kit it is packed full of detail coming as it does with a full fighting compartment and engine bay. The detail is truly amazing and I can't wait to get cracking!  |

I believe this was known as the "Matador"...? Or am I confusing this with another British AC? The AEC Matador was actually a truck, do a google search you will find loads on that. More on the A/C now and it's building up rather fast! the hull sides look really good with great rivet detail which should really pop out under some paint. The two rear cross braces caused some head scratching as initially I thought I'd got the body out of whack or the kit had been moulded wrong. But actually they are at an angle, quirky British design or what?      |

Ooooh, neat project! Going with the box scheme? Thinking about it! Here's some more progress for you and I have now completed the engine and added the suspension parts. The engine looks really nice just a pity most of it is hidden. I have noticed whilst working on the kit that it suffers from over complication syndrome, i.e why use one part when you can use ten! A good case in point are the drive shaft connectors which in some cases are made up of 4 or 5 parts when one would have been fine. Lets face it how many models are displayed belly up? There are also loads of tiny parts that need to be added, cutting them off the runners is bad enough but clean up is near impossible. Another case of OCS. However once assembled it does look nice. The etch is very springy so needs heating over a candle before bending it. I also added parts ba25 & 26 to the front wheel shafts instead of the rear of the wheels as per instructions. This makes it easier to glue the wheels on later. Talking of wheels they are absolutely superb with no seam lines to worry about and nice detail which should really pop out once painted.       |

Man you're really moving on this one Pete! The OCS trend is a more common one these days it seems with many of the 'up and coming' manufacturers...but you can't argue with the level of detail that it produces for sure!

I have mixed feelings about OCS because I like the detail of scale models more than any other feature of this hobby and OCS is required in reaching a maximum of detail. I see where on occasion the the complication may be overkill but Id rather deal with OCS that some kits like early RPM where the entire model might consist of 20 parts or so. It maybe that the extrusion of these kits through slide manufacturing processes will totally eliminate OCS and make detailed kits with with only and dozen parts or less. That would certainly be a sad time for scale modelers like myself but no OCS. Manufacturing evolution is a very tricky thing and in this day and age slows for no man and it brings many unintended consequences so we need to be careful what we wish for.

This is my first ever miniart kit and I must say the level of detail exhibited is mouth watering BUT all those tiny parts are slightly annoying!

Looks like a very nice Kit. Great work inspite of the sausage fingers and bad eye sight! I feel your pain as my eye sight is letting me down as well.

Like Mr T I am torn between OCS and appreciation at times. I thought I'd go back to simple and basic with IBG's Bedford but the number of parts for some stages was excessive...but I think thats limitations in their moulding abilities and not OCS.
