Great find AG I hadn't heard of this particular event but my grandfather (officer in the RAMC) told me of instances where the ordinary German soldier, maybe seeing the facts for the first time in the cold light of day, decided enough was enough and effectively changed sides and joined the fight against the Nazi, mostly in not in direct combat as in this account but certainly in aid to the allies and non resistance.

This is cool... there should be a movie about this. Remember I am illiterate so I can not read books...

Guys, it would be great to put this historical event in a group build one day, no ? This is so fascinating and spectacular we as modelers have to give it attention.

Heard about this story some months ago, but I think it was the only occasion something like that would happen. The cruel truth is that German soldiers (and those 15-year-old boys turned into "soldiers") who would try to surrender, especially in the last days and weeks of the war, would be shot in the back by their fellow comrades, such was the indoctrination and fanaticism of the Third Reich! The most fanatic were also the most coward! But there is another story from Hürtgenwald, when a German Lieutenant would die in an attempt to help a wounded G.I. who lay in a mine field. He knew it was a death trap, the whole area was inaccessible still years after the war. Even today it's dangerous and there are many prohibited sectors. Cheers, Tobi
