I have questions about the late war colors for German tanks. Stay with me cuz they’re all at the end of the long post. Let me preface this by saying I do not now, or intend to in the future, get into a discussion about what the correct “Color” is. I know that’s what this is sort of but what I mean if there is an accepted “color” I will never say, “That’s the wrong shade of green.” To Macs credit he handled that quite well after getting zilched for his beautiful KT I have ever seen. I would have gone little nuts I think. Read that you bet you’re a$$ I would have, even if I had taken a gold. A comment that should never be made should have stayed that way. Not made.
This is meant to be a discussion, and a learning experience for me, about what may have been a change in the sentiment of what… let’s call it the “starting color” should be for late war vehicles. Whether it be based on opinion or new research or whatever else.
Hopefully you haven’t given up on this thread yet. The 1st to pics below are of a KT and Jagdtiger I built with what I considerer to be acceptable colors within the normal ranges of hues. That not withstanding comments that might be made like before someone goes off there nut and says it’s just flat out wrong. There are countless of German tank models painted in these colors.
The first time I noticed a distinct difference in the 3 color scheme was in the AK Int’l DVD “Enamel Weathering Techniques Washes, Fading and Oils”. I’ve come across it several times since then too. Examples below are Macs lovely KT (hope you don’t mind me using your model…I’ll remove it if you want me to) and a scan of a Hetzer from Mike Rinaldi’s book “Tank Art 1”. Even though this is a scan from a book this was bought and paid for by me I will, for good order sake, add this is reproduced purely for discussion purposes. Even the colors in the AK paint set I bought support this scheme.
So… a long way to get to this point and hopefully you’ve soldiered on. Has there been new information discovered that explains these colors? Is it simple that this color scheme was out there and I just missed it until now? Would this only be appropriate for late war, 1945 as the AK box indicates? I recently bought a Panzer IV l/70 final version. So if they were built from 8/44 to 3/45, and this is the "final" version. wouldn’t it be conceivable that I could use those late war colors? And lastly… YIPPIE… on the AK paint set box… What does the” aus ’44 DG I” and “aus ’44 DG III” for the dunkelgelb mean?
