Hey guys,
I figured I'd start a thread here to show you some of the "progress" I've made on the dio that I started with the Whirblewind from my duel with Dupes: www.modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/4894/ack-attack-barrels-fury
If any of you followed that duel, you might recall this picture:
So I decided to build a little scene that took place about 15 minutes prior to the picture being taken, as the crew drove the vehicle into place to cover it with hay.
My initial efforts went OK, but I felt like the base was a little bare, so I added some 'shrubbery' to one edge and a pile of gear. Then I took a good hard look at my 'dirt' and was not real happy. I used real dirt (potting soil actually) but I found the texture to be off:
so I decided to experiment a little and see what other options I could come up with. So, off and on for the past couple months, I've hacked away at the dirt and used a variety of things to simulate it. I think I've finally found a happy combination - this is real dirt too, but from some digging I did to for an archaeology class I taught. I had bagged some of the sand - a really fine glacial till that is pretty common in this part of Connecticut. I simply spread a layer of white glue, then sprinkled it over. I like that, while fairly consistent in size, there is enough variation to give it a more realistic look. I still have to paint and weather it a bit (too red for my tastes), but I think I'm happy overall:
I also decided that the two figures I had planned to stand at the end of the dirt pile, taking a smoke break while the driver gets the vehicle positioned were not enough. So, I added a fourth figure, this one stacking up the extra gear they will need, since they seem to be setting in for a long stay. I started with this guy:
Gave him a new head, and decided that, instead of pushing the wheelbarrow, he'd be carrying stuff. But what... hmm, how about an MG? Well, OK, but both his hand and the MG will need some surgery to make that work:
For the other hand I decided on a box (of mines, I think) with a handle. I also gave him a captured Russian submachine gun and this is what I got so far:
Still have some final painting details to do, but I'm pretty satisfied.
