A bit of a break from the norm for me, I was given this as a Birthday prezzy by the In-laws last weekend, and as it coincided with me finishing my 2 Paper Panzers I decided I'd crack on with it before I got back to my Braille scale, I even had to break out my large photo booth from the shed to take these pics as it is way to big for my usual booth I use for the Braille kits ...... Its a Tamiya Panther Ausf.D, nice, easy and fast build straight out the box, had it more or less built on monday, primed and layed on the camo last night, tonight I put the first filter on and as we speak I'm waiting for the first gloss coat to dry. I aim to get it to a stage where I'm using purely furry sticks to finish it of before next week as I'm being deployed to a different area for work for a week and will be taking this and a couple of other WIPs with me to do at the hotel in an effort to keep me out the pub. Anyhow, this is where I was at as of last night, I'm painting it up to look as though she and her crew have been around the block a few times and she has been repaired when necessary and then pressed back into the line..... Hope you like her..... ATB Sean

I believe so, yes, not my usual scale, so don't keep abreast of the new releases in 1/35
Father in law went shopping for a model for me but wasn't sure what I had, have done, would like, etc, etc, ( what can I say, he doesn't make models, so doesn't get it when it comes to having more than one of the same thing).... He said he asked the assistant what he thought and the assistant said it had only come in a couple of weeks ago, so all evidence points to it being the new one.

Small progress..... Gloss coat, highlighting, pin lining, decals, first oil and rust stains and streaks added. To follow next, first matt coat, chipping and some more rust streaking and wear. ATB Sean

Nearly there..... Chipping done, though I think I may of gone over board with it and some basic weathering and mud, I don't want to go to heavy on these as I want the different coloured wheels to still show through. Still to do..... Re silver the rubbed areas on the wheels and tracks, some rust pigments on the exhaust stacks and maybe the crew if I have some spare time, though to be honest I'm itching to get something smaller on the bench and started Anyhoo, the pics.... close up of the chipping/scratchs.... to much?? As always C&Cs welcome ATB Sean

Some nice work there Sean! A little rule of thumb that I always try to keep in the back of my mind when it comes to chipping is that when that little voice says 'just add a little bit more', it probably means I've already gone too far. The chipping you've produced is fairly heavy and probably not as random as you might like as a result. It also helps to try to think in 1/35 scale terms when doing this sort of weathering...a 1mm chip is actually 35mm in size on the real deal, so the challenge is always one of trying to balance realism with the aesthetic that goes with a chipping process as part of the weathering. Less is usually more under those circumstances. The driver's hatch, in particular seems to have the most 'regular' pattern to its chips, if you removed a couple here or there it would probably look/feel more natural to the patterns. Same thing with the engine hatch while the rear turret hatch has the more natural look to it. It's hard to introduce randomness...the human eye naturally wants to seek out patterns and when you're working on something like this it's easy to start out random but not so easy to maintain it! There's also the question of personal style/taste that goes into a heavily weathered finish too, so if you're happy with the heavy weathering patterns, don't let my suggestions stop you by any means! Having said all of that, your technique is right on and the chips have that nice depth feel to them, so you've got a good handle on it there!

Thanks for the input Bill, Some valid points well made, I was aiming to give the replacement panels the look that they were a lot older and more heavily used than the rest of the tank, and the repairs crew were less than gentle when re assembling the vehicle, which I think I've achieved, but as you've pointed out there are areas where I should of reigned it in, especially around the hatches. To be honest its the first time I've attempted chipping in this scale, so its still very much a learning process, and to be fair I do know I always over do it on my Braille scale stuff and am making efforts to sort that out.... I guess I just got 'caught up in the moment' with the Panther It would be to much of a ball ache to go back over them now, so they can stay as they are, I'm more interested in getting it finished off now as I can feel the stash calling for my attentions again ATB Sean

Crew are a WIP with several other figures for my Braille scale projects, so until they're done, this is done enough for me to call it complete now. Hope you all like it. ATB Sean

Nice work Sean! The crew's probably in no hurry to get assigned to this cobbled-together replacement.
