ON THE BENCH (OTB)
I really hate not running full on WIPs while I'm sitting her constantly working on stuff. After all that's why we are here, no? So this is my solution. A thread where I can share little snippets of stuff as I go. I'll update the title to reflect whats OTB as I go. The shots will be all cell phone. Thankfully I've got a new one and it seems to have a better camera...still not great though...so apologies. Info will be limited to what won't be in an article. The stuff I build "for me" will still have their own dedicated threads. For example, the 1/32 Intruder is still a WIP it's just been sidelined a bit, but is very much a living project. I hope this helps me feel more a part of things and that the format isn't too cumbersome. I thank you for tagging along.
So right now I'm working on the Airfix EE Lightning. I've really been wanting to do this one ever since I bought my first bottle of Alclad, so when I was asked to do it I got in my car and began driving to the UK to pick up the kit...I was out of Texas before I realized there's a whole ocean between us, so I can home and waited for USPS. I've had this one about a week and I'm already to the point of primer. The kit is really good to be stamped 1994 (though I believe it wasn't released until 1995). No major filler, but the clear parts needed some significant micro-meshing because they were awful. I've spent the better part of the past two nights prepping for primer. As you know NMF will make blemishes stick out like a sore thumb. Here she sits. Primer looks good just a couple touch up areas to address. Hope to lay down black tomorrow after some aggressive micro mesh treatment. This one has Eduard interior PE and a Master pitot tube.

Always neat to get a glimpse behind the curtain!

Hopefully I can start flinging Alclad tonight. I put a second coat of primer last night. The idea there was to just "make sure" with the micro filling. I didn't think more primer would harm the engraved detail since it's really crisp..yet not overdone and I was right. Still have plenty of room to add layers

After a bit of touching up rough parts of the primer I was finally able to get the the Alclad. I decided to skip the black coat. You just really don't need it for normal Alclad colors. Started with Aluminum. Masked and hit the blue with XF-4. Now I need to move on to doing various panels in different shades...which has actually started (no pics yet). I'll probably have one last shot of the various shading and then dark on this one until finished pics later down the road.

Agreed, Bill! Jimmy - so primer gray followed by Alclad? I was under the impression that Alclad WOULD NOT WORK without the gloss black primer underneath. Since you've subsequently masked and painted on top of the silver, I'm guessing that's not entirely true?

No. You don't need the black unless it's one of the high shine finishes (chrome, airframe and polished aluminum). The normal shades work fine over any color primer. Alclad sells their own grey primer.
That being said, a black base makes it a little easier to see coverage. Against grey you can put it on a little thick of you have trouble seeing it. Not a problem with black.

It's a great scheme. I managed to get all the various panel differentiation done, got the anti-glare painted and a couple other details. Tried out the X-22/lacquer thinner technique for a gloss coat on the spine and tail. Have to take this one dark now. Up next is Trumpeter's F-106 which I will tease a bit here. I did a review for that kit here: jimsmodels.com/reviews/kit-reviews/trumpeter-148-f-106a-delta-dart/ if interested. Stay tuned.

The Trumpeter F-106 has been the latest victim. I threw the Big Ed set and True Details resin seat at this one. Painting is Mr. Hobby Auqeous with special thanks to Albion Alloys and Model Aircraft for supplying them. Boy I forgot just how good this paint is. I can't find any pics of 106s with any significant degree of dirt, and that pains me because I'm aching to weather something. However, I have built in some tonal variation with black basing, but it's minimal and will be much more subdued in the end.

Looks like a fun Dart! I imagine these would've been kept in pretty good condition since they were primarily stationed State-side as interceptors during the Cold War. Maybe if you look around for some ANG birds you might find some a little longer in the tooth? I think they stayed with the ANG units up through the early/mid-80s in some cases IIRC.

Ok this will be the last peek at this one. Carcal decals are down and have been over-coated with more gloss. I really liked the Carcal decals. Right up there with some of the best I've used. Settled in nicely and not a hint of silvering. The sheet actually doesn't represent 72503. I patched together some numbers from the sheet to represent the aircraft in the photo below. Not much left to this one. I'll be doing a grey panel line wash and that's about it. As you can see these things were pretty clean.

Looks like a dead ringer to me! Nice work on the decals for this one. It's funny, a good friend of mine just asked me to do a 1/72 F-102 for him since his father flew both the F-102 and the F-106 as part of his career with SAC in the '50s and '60s (he was also a fighter pilot in Korea, F-86s). The Meng F-102 was perfect as it already had markings for his dad's squadron included, the 327th FIS in 1958, the exact year his dad served with the unit. Couldn't ask for a better alignment of the stars. Of course, it means I now have to build it for him as soon as the Texas is done.

I'd be all over the Meng 102 if I was at all interested in the scale. It does look like a nice kit. I hope someone does a new tool one in 48th sooner or later as I'd like to have both...of course I have an end goal of having all the century series jets built.
