Paint it black! It's primer time! I airbrushed some Testors Model Master Flat Black to do double duty as a primer/pre-shade for the gray areas and also to remove the plastic sheen from the solar panel areas on both wing sets. Next up will be fun with gray!

Well that took no time at all. Looking good for paint. Can't wait.

This is giving me new motivation to assembly-line an entire fleet of TIE variants...although I suppose some of the resin ones would slow things down a bit. Looking good Bill!

Thanks Jimmy! Primer is the easy part, now I'm going to have to mask and paint all that gray...definitely will take more time to pull that off successfully. Dupes, go for it! That would be a neat thing to see...depending on how many variants and in what scale you were tackling them of course!

Dupes, go for it! That would be a neat thing to see...depending on how many variants and in what scale you were tackling them of course! Scale - 1/72 (need available TIE chassis' to use for conversion bases). Variants - hmmm. I've never actually listed them out to see how many I can do. I should probably put up this pic first: Some of the ones in that pic are pretty rare (comic book sourcing, I think?) and I'm not sure what goes into making them. Some are very minor alterations to existing stuff. So here's what I can do with my current box of TIE parts: straight plastic - TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor, TIE X1. plastic with conversion - TIE Clutch, TIE Raptor, Imperial Guard TIE Interceptor. resin - TIE Bomber, TIE Predator, TIE Droid, TIE Droid Bomber (already done). resin with conversions/scratching - TIE Heavy Bomber, TIE Interdictor. kitbash - TIE Experimental Mk.I (just ahve to want to sacrifice two kits to do it). Probably several more fall into this category. Of course, there are/were several other variants that came in resin kit form in the past - most of which are difficult (read: near impossible) to find any more - Chiss Clawcraft, TIE Scimitar, TIE Phantom. So that's the short summary, anyway.

This guy here...wow. I didn't know there were that many to begin with. Wow. Maybe I don't want to encourage you to actually start this project since I'm emotionally invested in others that are equally complex..haha.
You don't half a$$ anything do you?

You don't half a$$ anything do you? I am not known for half-assing anything. Full-ass only! And yes...the other project. Believe me, there are too many projects. Battlemechs, Ma.K, Star Wars, those minor "armor and aircraft" categories, and, of course, the Other Project.

Today's update is brought to you by the number 3 and the letter M! While it may not seem like much, it actually took about 3 hours working with my cutting mat, trusty #11 Exacto, and of course some blue painter's tape to get all of the wing panels properly masked. That means paint will soon be flying once again!

Leon, paint would've flown today but it took so darn long to do the masking (the downside to my chosen method of assembly and the double-sided nature of the wings!) that it got pushed to the next session.

3 hours to mask two full TIEs? That's not bad at all.
As always, I wish there was an easier way!

Spent a good while in the paint booth today...nearly as long as I spent yesterday masking in fact! Testors Model Master RLM 02 Grau did the trick nicely over the previous primer/pre-shade coat of Flat Black. Working in 1/72 space meant getting up close and personal with the airbrush tip, I'm very glad that I kept the bodies and wings separate. I'm going to continue with that strategy through the rest of the finish/weathering stages and will attach them only at the very end for added flexibility. Fun continues!

Added another layer to the paint/finish today with more time spent in the spray booth. This time I was working with some Model Master IJN Sky Gray to provide some variation and depth to the overall finish. This should provide a solid foundation for the additional weathering/finish steps so I should be just about done with the airbrush phases. We'll see how much touch-up work I'll have to do once I remove all the masking tape from the wings of course!

Thanks Leon! Jimmy, I'm glad...would hate to face Vader's wrath otherwise! That and my spraying hand is pretty worn out after 2 back-to-back days of long airbrush sessions.

You are the sneaky one! I have been gone on two big trips and you choose the best time to start this build. So sorry I couldn't join you... still no mojo! For sure those fighters will look real nice next to my favorite mug... Last update I really like what you have done by adding depth!

My son saw one of the older AMT or Revell Tie's in the hobby store a while back and has been begging for me to do one since. I think you just sold me on these. He'll love it. I'm not going to show him your pics until it's done, but I'm sure he'll be insistent on picking my MoM vote when they are finished

Andy, sorry buddy, the Force was too strong to resist forever! That and I had a convenient gap in between projects that this one fit into perfectly. You can be like Yoda's 'blue glow' though and ride shotgun! Lucas, thanks! I'm having fun with it, they are the perfect testbed for some different techniques that may just translate over onto my USS Texas project, have to see. Jimmy, these Bandai kits are really impressive IMHO. I've been thoroughly enjoying them and very happy with the level of detail they provide in 1/72. Get two, build one for yourself and have your son build the other along with you! Since they are press-together and have kid-friendly options like stickers instead of decals and regular 'open' parts for the canopy vs. the clear parts that need masking, it could be the ideal father-son project to get him hooked. That and they are pretty inexpensive if you order from HLJ or similar. Glad to hear I've locked up a key demographic in the MoM voting for sure!

I love the depth that youve achieved. Looking forward to seeing the tape come off.
