Doesn't surprise me about the Ammo stuff - their filters and (especially) their panel line washes are a pretty weak enamel so I could see them not having the same bite. They'd probably do better over paint.
Good info for when I tackle the Bandai kit I just ordered - the 1/12 Scout Trooper and speeder bike!

Andy, sorry buddy, the Force was too strong to resist forever! That and I had a convenient gap in between projects that this one fit into perfectly. You can be like Yoda's 'blue glow' though and ride shotgun! Lucas, thanks! I'm having fun with it, they are the perfect testbed for some different techniques that may just translate over onto my USS Texas project, have to see. Jimmy, these Bandai kits are really impressive IMHO. I've been thoroughly enjoying them and very happy with the level of detail they provide in 1/72. Get two, build one for yourself and have your son build the other along with you! Since they are press-together and have kid-friendly options like stickers instead of decals and regular 'open' parts for the canopy vs. the clear parts that need masking, it could be the ideal father-son project to get him hooked. That and they are pretty inexpensive if you order from HLJ or similar. Glad to hear I've locked up a key demographic in the MoM voting for sure! The 4-5 year old demographic should never be overlooked

Thanks Wes! Tape should be coming off in the next couple of days...then the inevitable touch-up process I'm sure. Hopefully that will be kept to a minimum. Doogs, they do seem to be formulated for paint coverage (makes sense, these are filters/washes after all) and not as hot as standard enamel stuff as a result. Not sure if that's also tied into their preferred use over acrylics or not, but the few times I've used them over enamel painted surfaces they've performed just fine. That Speeder Bike/Trooper Combo should be a fun one! Just watch out for the trees...

I wouldn't have guessed that the addition of just one slightly different tone of white/grey would offer so much enhancement to the overall look. It's been neat to watch this progress.

It's been fun playing with it for sure. When you think about it all the colors are on the same spectrum starting with black to the light gray. Enamels will also cure into each other slightly so if the layers are built up lightly over each other it can produce a neat effect. I am very happy with how it's turning out so far, better than I expected in fact.

One of the nice little features in the Bandai kits is the inclusion of a small base. It's meant to represent a small section of the Death Star surface and while the instructions indicate that you can clip them together, they aren't big enough on their own to allow the two TIE fighters to be joined together...so I'll be keeping them separate. Out came the airbrush again and I did the same Flat Black pre-shade/primer and RLM 02 Grau overcoat approach. I'm going to leave these a darker gray to provide more contrast with the TIEs themselves, so the RLM 02 was sprayed with a fine diameter tip and very close application. That gave my trigger finger quite the workout but was worth it for the end result. Since I had the Flat Black out already, I took the masking tape off the wings and checked them for any touch-ups needed. A little bit here and there was all that was necessary. I'm very happy with how well the masking did its job throughout the process. Next up is sealing all this up and getting ready for the weathering process.

Taking advantage of the Labor Day extended weekend, I started in on the weathering. As usual, everything got a sealing coat of Future first yesterday and I let that sit overnight so it would be ready for today. There's so much detail on these TIEs that I decided to go with a pin wash approach vs. filters to get it all to pop out. The standard fighter went first and after about 4 hours, I had the body done. The wings won't take nearly as long, of course, it's the body that has the vast majority of the detail. My trusty combo of Burnt Umber and a 10/0 pointed brush followed by clean thinner to tighten things up where needed did the trick. It's well known that the original Star Wars studio models were put together with bits and pieces of plastic model kits that the model builders bought and cannibalized to create some of the more interesting features via 'gizmology'. I couldn't help but smile when I recognized this key part on the backside of the TIE Fighter. Look closely and you'll see half of a Sherman bogey flipped upside down. So a 1/35 piece originally gets scaled down by Bandai to 1/72...so that makes it ultimately a 1/2520 piece in the end if my rusty math skills are applied correctly. I noticed that my blue-tack masks for the cockpit hatch had gotten a little squished down during the painting phases, so I removed them to see if a little touch-up was required. Sure enough, there were a couple of rough spots so those were dealt with now and I'll re-mask before applying a flat coat to ensure they don't fog over.

Ohhhh yeah - that is looking GOOD!
I've always held that armor modelers can make the best transition to sci fi.

One time I paused one of the movies and was pointing out all the tank parts on a Star Destroyer to my wife. She thought I was an even bigger geek than usual. I never noticed the bogey! Looks spectacular. Your usual weathering MO sure does translate well to these.

Thanks Leon! Definitely in the home stretch now and not a moment too soon! Felt like I was working on an aircraft build again with all that detail.

Finally got all the pin washes down, this time on the wings. Whew! It was funny to find more armor-related stuff in all the intricate details. I found fire extinguishers, jacks, Bosch headlight mounts, and what even looks like engine halves (probably from cars) among other odd bits and pieces. I just need to re-mask the clear parts, apply some dull coat, then attach the wings. Almost done!

Looking great! I can practically hear that TIE scream! I'll admit to a very strong temptation to zoom them around the room on more than one occasion!

Somewhere I have a list of kits that ILM used to make all of the original studio models...while there IS a ton of armor, there are just as many cars and ships they used for "greeblification".

It's a rich landscape to draw from! I'd swear they used wheel rims for some of the round details on the wings too.
