All - if you haven't heard of Tanmodel yet, well, that's probably going to change soon. They've got a 1/48 RF-84F coming out, and a very ambitious roadmap behind it, including a 1/32 F-4E Phantom, 1/32 F-111 and 1/48 SR-71. On a whim, I reached out to their owner to see if he'd answer a few questions - they're doing lots of interesting things like 3D laser scans of real aircraft, designing with buildability in mind (imagine that!) and so on. The answers I got back were definitely fascinating to read, and I hope y'all find them the same: doogsmodels.com/2015/09/15/interview-with-baris-tansoy-of-tanmodel/

Thanks Doogs.
It was a good read. I'm surprised all the big guys like Trupeter aren't doing this already. Small companies have been scanning real people into stunning 3D printed figures for a couple of years now.

From what I understand, Trumpeter in particular has some difficulty getting the physical access to kits to do this kind of scanning. I know Airfix has started doing it, and I'd be shocked if it doesn't become standard practice inside ten years.

Great read. I hope their modeler first attitude translates into great kits. I was a bit on the fence about the RF-84, but I'll get it for sure now. Sounds like there's a good bit of passion being put into these, so I'll need to see it first hand.

A 1/48 SR-71 would be huge! Very cool to see how technology is advancing in the hobby.

I'm really surprised that the 3d scanning hasn't been used more. I'm not really up to speed on all that technology but hasn't that been around a while? I know a few years ago I remember seeing something about people scanning classic car parts so they could fabricate hard to find replacements. I figured that technology was pretty solid by now...at least enough to scan subjects for making models.

Hell, I'm surprised there's not already a company that all the manufacturers subcontract the scanning work out to.
