Soon I'll be taking a departure from my normal modeling MO and need to ask: What's the best way to strip chrome plated parts, and is the plastic under the plating normal styrene?
Regards, Mark

2 words - Purple Power! You will hear all types of suggestions, including oven cleaner, but for the price and results, Purple Power can't be beat. And yes, it's just good 'ol styrene underneath. If you need any other suggestions, feel free to ask, and I will help you all I can.

To get that nice chrome finish the styrene gets a high gloss coating. The gluing surfaces need to be scraped or sanded to get a good bond. I built the chrome Tamiya P-51 and didn't know about the gluing surfaces and the seams kept popping open.

On the safe side...Purple Power does work well Mark, as does 409, Simple Green, most major brands of household cleaners like that. Let them soak for 15 20 minutes and you might have to hit them with a tooth bush to get the crevasses clean. There are a couple spray bottle break part de-greaser/cleaners that work from my understanding as well as oven cleaners. I bought some concentrated oven cleaner, not the spray can stuff, a while back. Cleaned the parts in about one minute. A bit caustic and should be handled correctly, but there was no fuss involved. Just cleaned the parts with soap and water after.
