Ok I've been stuck in a whirlpool of "Modeling Mojo enteruptis" and just can't get things going. The only glimmer of "mojo" hope has been to do something different. So I desided to do a ship. I haven't built a ship in some years and not one bigger then 1/700 in decades so my interest has been picqued by this. I'm doing this mainly out of box just to get my feet wet as it were, however as you will see that may not always be the case. So here we go.
Started working on the H.M.S. Dreadnought the 1907 version from Trumpeter.
Lots of small sub assemblies ahead.
Well the first thing you relearn while ship building is patience. I worked for 2 hours and completed funnel number 2 and started one of the main batteries.
Big changes coming up.....
I didn't like the kit barrels so they had to be replaced turned metal ones. So much for out of the box.
I believe that model ships should be in the water. So I was off to the bandsaw and did some major surgery. Was full hull now waterline.
How about some paint? Unlike some armor builds you can't really paint a ship after it's complete. It must be done in stages. So I started with the quarter deck. I painted overall grey and then hand painted the deck and put on a oil wash to bring out the wood plank pattern.
Outfitting continues.....adding deck fittings and beginning construction of super structure parts. Many small parts which makes building slow and tidious.
Model ship building is carried out much the same way as the real thing. Working up from the main deck building the super structure one layer at a time.
More deck details as we continue to outfit the quarter deck
"CAPTAIN ON THE BRIDGE!"
I started work on the bridge and chart house. I drilled and opened the windows on front of the bridge. I really don't know why Trumpeter didn't mold this part that way.
Here is wher she stands as of 0700 this morning. I still have time to mess this up, but the "mojo" is beginning to circulate again. Stay tuned and maybe Dreadnought will put to sea.
