Roland D.VIb 8/22 DONE!

With the Airbus in the hanger time for some real fun. I've order some 5 color lozenge decals from Aviattic. Read great things about these. The linen texture and rib tapes are printed on the decals. The set I order are also pre faded. Sweet! Apparently they are translucent so there cab be some black basing under the lozenge. Gas patch turnbuckles and air speed indicator will round out the field.

If it was me I'd have sent a mail to WNW stating how much misery and mental anguish they have caused and asked for a kit/discount as compensation.

Connie is on the shelf ss time to officially start the Roland. Part clean up on a WNW is such a joy. Cuz there barely ain't none!

Started the interior paining. The cockpit side walls are Uschi wood plank decals as are the floor boards.

Found a wood prop I started to carve a while back and decided to try and finish it for the build.

But... the propeller needs to be remade. In Germany a proreller did of 8-9 sheets (generally). Your propeller is made of 5 sheets. It is not enough. On Benz Bz.IIIa engines (he was used by this plane) Integral propellers were used (generally). He has more graceful form.

The 'Integral' - so is called a propeller form. She looks so:

This propeller is stuck together from wood veneer, turned manually and varnished. I have established him on Sopwith to Camel in 1/48.
On Roland D.VIb put Rahtjen (Germany) propellers.  Rahtjen propellers look so:

This firm released propellers under the Germania propeller trademark (Suddeutsche Propeller Werken). This inscription is visible on a propeller photo from the museum.

Back from the land of the lost. I long for the day when was accused of building fast. And while failing miserably, attempting to keep up with dupes.

I decided to go with the solid wood looking prop. This is Uschi wood planking decals. I am happy with the outcome.



Cowling mock and the limited view of the engine.



Aileron attachment points are tiny so metal pins will make then stronger.



Lower wing in place so the LG can be glued up and set in the right position for the glue to set.

Good bench time for a bad reason. My best friend, more than a friend, we were like brothers, passed away last week. The Xanax only went so far so I had to get my mind focused on something so I turned to the hobby. Needed to see if it was really as therapeutic as we always say it is. Well, it is that and more.

The fuselage of the Roland has been primed and the black stripe masked off then the white band painted. A red tail comes next. I "borrowed" a technique to take advantage of the translucent Aviattic decals to look like the wood framing pressed up against the cloth. It will be muted a bit once the weathering/fading starts.









The kit is the "b" version which is more for the different engine than anything else. The later ones had enlarged control surfaces but the Aviattic sheet fro the "b" only had the late style decals when 1/2 the schemes in the kit have the early style. Would have been nice to know that the "b" kit needed the "a" decals when I ordered. Luckily the larger aileron decals can be cut down to the correct shape.
