Time for a change up Going to do this as SS-222, USS Bluefish, and give it to my dad who was a first class engineman on board the real thing back in 1953 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 003 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 005 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 006 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr As can be seen the hull needs some extra attention. May have to get the Eduard detail set for this one Regards, Mark

Thanks gents Mart Dierk's right, 52" in length Dierk that's what she said The kit's basically pretty good but full of little uglies such as warped parts and gaps. The good news is all this is pretty easy to fix; the bad news is there's a lot of surface area for them to occur 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 003 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Warpage quick solution 004 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 006 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Regards, Mark

This will be a fun (and big!) project to follow along with Mark, even better that it's for your dad. Pulling up a chair to watch the shipyard get to work!

Thanks gents Got the hull de-gapped and sanded, screw shafts, screw guards, and bowplanes on 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 002 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr The superstructure, true to Revell, is kind of a nasty mixed of warped parts and poor fit. Guess I've been spoiled by the new armor kits I've been involved with lately 004 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 005 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr You'd think they'd do a better job on a hundred dollar kit. I'll get it nailed together regardless. I've also got the Edurard detail set on the way, I will stop working on this until it arrives as I am not sure that further progress would be wise until I get the upgrade parts Regards, Mark

Looks like the shipyard crew has their work cut out for them there Mark, the Eduard parts should help up the finish for sure.

Got one sitting in the stash, she is a big sucker and hope to get to it someday. I'm Currently in work on the 1/350th Trumpeter Ticonderoga and is giving me headaches with fit issues. Also got the Eduard PE sets which is making my eyes cross with some of the pieces being barely visible.

That does look nasty Mark! You'll get it in ship shape condition.

Not what you might call a shake-and-bake then. Sometimes it can be more satisfying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, though. If you're itching to get on with it before the PE arrives you could always have a look on the Eduard website: they usually have the instructions as a PDF file for download. Should give you an idea what you can still safely nail together.

Thanks gents Detail set has arrived. I hate PE. What was I thinking? 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Sometimes PE makes a good template for styrene 003 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr This is the result of five stages of glue, clamp, and let dry. It really did not want to go together 006 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Fit has not been good but I more or less expected such given the manufacturer. Should be able to start paint within the next couple of bench sessions Regards, Mark

That detail set should definitely offer some improvement, at least a good bit of it is large...but then the rest of it isn't. Beat this puppy into submission Mark!

As PE sets go, your's looks quite manageable. I'm not a great fan of working with it myself, but I do like the additional level of detail you can achieve with it.

Thanks gents Thought I'd have paint on by now BUT 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 002 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr The kit supplied after deck railing was wretched at best. So, 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 002 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Now it's time for the PE dance to really commence. Don't know how much of it I'll be able to stand to do, especially since most of it's so small it'll be pretty much invisible. Revell actually did a fairly decent job on most of the small parts altho soft detail, flash, and huge attachment points were a problem 004 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 005 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Taking longer than I'd thought Regards, Mark

Your scratched railing is a vast improvement! The attachment points are indeed a bit on the hefty side - I'd suggest a very fine saw. As with all PE I've ever seen, some parts were probably added just to fill up the fret (and bump up the price...) To keep your torture to a minimum, only use the bits with most visual impact.

Can't blame you for replacing that railing...it would've taken a magician to get it all lined up and connected! As is often the case with ship builds, it's deceptive how much time often has to go into the detail departments. Can't tell you how often I've sat down thinking "I'm going to get X, Y, Z done today" and am lucky if I get even X done!

Thank you gents Got some color on it 001 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 002 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 003 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr 004 by Mark Hartig, on Flickr Need a bit more black on the after 40mm methinks. So, to weather or not? Probably need to get at least a wash or two on it to bring out some of the details Regards, Mark

Looking good with paint on Mark! I'm a mucky kind of guy, so I'd go for weathering. Thanks for the handy hint on the cardboard letting us know which end is which but shouldn't it be called 'stern'?
