Morning Dierk
Had a read through the blog and your trials and tribulations so far.
Great work kit bashing the two together, looks good, and with paint it looks stunning
Really impressed with the 4BO paint and modulation.
I shall watch with great interest, how it develops.
Nice one

Thanks Leon! Glad you like it! Ee by gum lad, you get up early Steve I'm in two minds about the Vallejo 4BO CM set: yes, the colours work well, but the two highlight colours aren't available in 17ml bottles, I rarely use the 4BO primer - much preferring the light grey one - and satin lacquer I have anyway. So, having to lash out about a tenner for a set of six tiny bottles that I really only need two of is a bit painful for someone blessed with short arms and deep pockets

Hi mate That is coming on very nicely indeed!! Looking forward to seeing this one finished! Unfortunately, the brush that's been in my hand recently is the DIY version.... . All the best. Andrew

Unfortunately, the brush that's been in my hand recently is the DIY version.... . Think of it as 1:1 scale modelling Maybe you can introduce some subtle weathering effects, like streaking grime?

While I'm waiting for the decals for the BA-10 to arrive - not much point in starting the weathering until they do - I've made a start on this: I'm afraid I'm not going to blog the build - it's making me revert to my former foul-mouthed self, and I wouldn't be able to write about it without dipping into my vast treasure trove of swear words...misleading instructions and fit issues galore...found a build blog (in Russian) on youtube and was wondering why the front-end was slathered in filler - now I know If - with a capital I and a capital F - I manage to cobble it together without looking too horrendous, it'll get a dunkelgelb paintjob, possibly with some green stripes.

Introducing some subtle weathering effects.......let's work than one through..... Scene - freshly painted downstairs shower and utility rooms. Bright white paint by the way - it's called 'Absolute White' so that gives you an idea of how white..... Andrew to wife (with airbrush and other modelling paraphernalia in hand): "I've been trying out some colour modulation and weathering techniques. In terms of the weathering I was aiming for late 1944 winter mud around the bottom of the door frames and a more general winter oily/dusty/battle grime on the walls. Do you think I've pulled it off???"I'll let you try and work out what my ever-patient wife's response would probably be.... By the way can you post a link to the Russian youtube build blog for the staff car - the filler comment has me intrigued...

Nice one Andrew! Just for you: link 1 right at the start. And link2 from 9:20min and right at the end. Can't find the one that was really covered in filler, sorry. I have to say I got a better fit with less filler, but more brute force the total lack of locating tabs really doesn't help at all, nor does the warped roof...or the missing shelf between the back seats and the rear of the car.

I may post some WIP pics of the Opel after all. But I'm really not liking this kit much at all: although the moulds are from 2012 it feels like the kind of kit that used to be produced behind the Iron Curtain to be sent to the class-enemy in the West to drive them nuts. For example: the steering wheel comes in two parts, each part with three attachment points then you have a really nicely detailed engine, but no way of leaving the bonnet open - same goes for the doors. On the plus side (yes, there is one) dimensionally the kit is spot on. As cars go, this one's pretty big - about the same size as the BA-10!

Not much to report on the BA-10 front, but I made a start on the wheels. I was aiming for a dusty look - as these vehicles were used as check points I'm assuming they saw little if any off-road action. So I painted the tread with a dust-looking enamel paint (Humbrol 121 I think) and then dry-brushed Vallejo Dark Rubber over the top. The tyre walls will get a wash of the same enamel paint to unify everything: Now, I foolishly promised some pics of the Opel... Scratched a shelf from plastic card to go behind the rear bench seat: Passenger's sunblind is going to get another coat of paint. Having checked lots of pics and vids of this car, it turns out leather seats were quite rare, so I attempted a cloth-look for the benches. First I textured the surface by running a grinding tool side to side across the seats and backrests. Next came a coat of Vallejo Aged White with a drop of Vallejo Sand, followed by various brown and a dark grey enamel colours dry-brushed and dry-stippled on, attempting to give it a look of ground-in dirt and grime - this car would've had a hard life after all: first serving as a front-line run-about for a German officer and then performing the same job for the soviets. The decals for the speedo and clock were unuseable IMO, so I painted the faces Ivory and then drew on markings with a fine pencil followed by a blob of Micro Crystal Clear for glazing: The door-linings got a similar, but toned down, treatment to the bench seats. Nice touch: ICM included the ashtrays in the armrests: The somewhat messy paintjob in the rear panels shouldn't matter, as it shouldn't be all that visible: The next step fills me with trepidation: fitting the multi-part body...

Having put the body togeher this morning, I have to say that my trepitation was well-founded as it turns out - I don't even need a crystal ball to know that the future of this build will see much filling and sanding

Another yummie model in the making, great job so far my good man ! Many words spring to my mind that would suitably describe this kit - yummie doesn't even make the top 100!

Well, for what it's worth, gave the Opel a CM coat of Dunkelgelb. Let's see how this develops: I'm still in two minds whether I should attempt a free-hand green camo scheme - never done it before and I'm not confident of a positive outcome. Also, should I go for white-wall tyres? Thanks for stopping by and ACW

Go for the free hand camo Dierk! I did, and boy did it go mammaries up! That'll learn me listening to any other than the voices in my head. Andrew and Leon: karma-1 not really, but it's the thought that counts. Back to square one - Opel's been primed again.

Third time lucky(ish) Not 100% happy (now, there's a change ) but as the green camo was generally field-applied I think I can leave it alone now. Anyway, windows are no longer masked, so no more ABing paint... Detail painting next, followed by some scratches and chipping.

Cheers gents! Not really happy with the stripes on the right hand doors, but you live and learn I suppose. Gave the car a wash with 'oiled earth', done some detail painting and masked off the bits that'll have the soviet reg numbers and given them a layer of gloss in preparation for the decals.
